What is tempo and BPM?

Tempo is the speed of a piece of music, and we measure it in beats per minute, or BPM, the number of beats that fall in one minute. A beat is the steady pulse you tap your foot to, so a higher BPM means more beats each minute and the music tends to feel faster and more driving. Here is what a beat is, how BPM lines up roughly with different genres, what half-time and double-time mean, and how you set the tempo, the click and tap tempo in a DAW.

What is tempo?

Tempo is the speed of a piece of music. It is how fast or slow the beat goes, and we put a number on it with beats per minute, or BPM, which is simply the count of beats in one minute. A slow piece has a low tempo, a fast one has a high tempo, and the number is the same idea as the speed on a car: it tells you how quickly the music is moving, nothing more.

The beat is the thing tempo measures the speed of. It is the steady pulse you tap your foot to, nod your head to or clap along with, the regular tick running underneath everything else. Most music you hear has one, whether or not anything is playing exactly on it, and once you can feel that pulse you can count it, and once you can count it you can put a tempo on it.

Tempo is separate from the notes and the melody. You can play the same tune slow or fast, and the pitches do not change, only the rate of the pulse does. The beat is just the reference; how you place the notes against it, squarely on it or pushed off it, is a separate matter that syncopation covers. Tempo is usually the first thing you fix, because the drums, the bassline and everything else line up to it.

What does BPM mean?

BPM stands for beats per minute, and it is the number of beats that happen in one minute. A tempo of 120 BPM means 120 beats fit into a minute, which works out to two beats every second. At 60 BPM you get one beat a second, the same steady tick as the seconds hand on a clock, and at 180 BPM you get three beats a second.

As a rough rule, a higher BPM feels faster and more energetic, and a lower BPM feels slower and calmer. Push the same groove from 100 up to 128 and it starts to feel urgent and made for dancing; pull it down to 70 and it feels spacious and heavy. The number is a good first proxy for energy, though it is not the whole story, because how busy the parts are and how hard they hit change the feel as much as the raw speed does.

One thing worth knowing is what the beat is being counted as. In the common four beats to a bar that most pop and dance music uses, BPM counts the main quarter-note pulse, the one you tap your foot to. Faster notes like sixteenth-note hi-hats are still moving four times as often inside each of those beats, but the BPM number is tied to the main pulse, not to the fastest thing in the track.

What tempo should your genre be?

There is no single correct tempo for a genre, but most styles cluster in a rough range. Use the ranges below as a starting point rather than a rule, because plenty of good tracks sit outside them, subgenres pull in their own directions, and the edges overlap.

Notice how wide apart the two ends are. A ballad at 70 and a drum and bass track at 172 are worlds apart in feel, and the BPM tells you most of why before you have heard a single note. But the number alone can mislead, because the same BPM can be made to feel much slower or much faster, which is what half-time and double-time are about.

What are half-time and double-time?

Half-time and double-time are the same tempo felt at half or twice the rate. The BPM on the clock does not change. What changes is how often the main hits land, so the groove feels slower or faster while every part stays locked to the same underlying pulse.

In a half-time feel the backbeat lands half as often. Instead of a snare on beats two and four, you might put it only on beat three, so the groove leans back and feels heavier and slower even though the tempo is unchanged. This is why a drum and bass track running at 174 BPM can drop into a section that feels like it is crawling at 87: the drums have gone half-time while the tempo underneath stays exactly where it was.

Double-time is the opposite. The hits come twice as often, so the groove feels like it has sped up to twice the tempo without the BPM moving at all. It is common in drum and bass, trap and metal, where a track can flip between a relaxed feel and a frantic one while everything stays on the same grid. The useful part is that you keep one project tempo, so all your parts still line up, and you shift the energy just by changing how often the main accents fall.

Setting the tempo in your DAW

Everything above is easier to feel once you have set a tempo and are playing against it. In a DAW that means three small things: setting the project tempo, turning on the click so you can stay in time, and using tap tempo when you need to find a speed by ear rather than type it in.

The project tempo is a BPM field, usually sitting near the transport controls at the top of the window. Type a number into it and the whole project follows: the timing grid, the metronome and any tempo-synced effects like delays all move to that speed. It is worth setting before you record, so the parts you play line up with the grid instead of drifting against it. With the tempo and grid set, you can also quantize a part afterwards to snap its timing to that grid.

The metronome, or click, is a steady tick on each beat that you play along to so your timing stays honest. You toggle it on and off, and most DAWs can give you a count-in of a bar or two before recording starts so you can catch the tempo before you come in. Tap tempo is the reverse: you tap a key or a button in time with a track, and the DAW works out the BPM from the gaps between your taps. It is handy for matching the tempo of an existing song, or for pinning down the speed of an idea you hummed before you lose it.
