Quantization snaps the timing of your notes to a grid so they line up with the beat. You pick a grid, a quarter note, an eighth, a sixteenth, and every note moves to the nearest line of that grid, so a part played a little early or late lands on the beat. It fixes timing, not pitch, and how much of it you use is a choice: a full snap for a tight machine feel, a gentle pull that keeps some human looseness, or none at all.
The same idea works in any DAW, on MIDI parts and, with more effort, on recorded audio. Nothing here needs a particular plugin.
Quantization is the process of moving notes onto a timing grid so they line up with the beat. It takes each note you played and shifts it to the nearest line of a grid you have chosen, which tightens up loose timing without you replaying the part. If a note landed slightly early or slightly late, quantizing nudges it onto the beat.
The one thing to hold onto is that quantizing changes timing, not pitch. A wrong note stays a wrong note after you quantize it; it just sits in the right place rhythmically. Fixing pitch is a separate job. Quantizing is only ever about when a note happens, not which note it is or how loud it plays.
Because quantizing edits the timing of notes rather than a recording of sound, it is easiest on MIDI, where every note is just a message with a start time you can move. You draw or play a part into a MIDI track, it comes out a bit uneven, and quantize pulls it back into line. The same can be done to recorded audio, but that is a harder job, which the third section below gets into.
Think of the bar as a sheet of ruled lines. Your notes land wherever your hands put them, a touch ahead here, a touch behind there. Quantizing slides each note to the nearest ruled line. Choose how far apart the lines are, and choose how hard the notes get pulled, and you have most of what quantizing does.
You choose a grid, called the quantize value or resolution, and the DAW moves each note to the nearest line of that grid. A grid of a sixteenth note snaps everything to the nearest sixteenth, a grid of a quarter note snaps to the nearest quarter, and triplet grids snap to triplet subdivisions. Picking the right value is most of the skill.
The value sets how fine the grid is. A smaller value, like a sixteenth or a thirty-second, gives more lines in the bar, so notes have somewhere close to move to and they shift only a little. A larger value, like a quarter, gives few lines, so a note can get dragged a long way. The usual guide is to match the grid to the fastest notes in the part: if the part has sixteenth-note hats, quantize to sixteenths, because a coarser grid would haul those hats onto the wrong beat.
Straight grids and triplet grids are different. If a part swings or rolls in threes, a straight sixteenth grid will fight it, so you reach for a triplet value instead. Many DAWs also let you quantize note ends or lengths, not just starts, though the start time is what most people mean by quantizing.

Set the value too coarse and quantizing does damage: a note that was close to the right sixteenth gets pulled all the way to the nearest quarter and now sits on the wrong beat. Set it too fine and it barely does anything, because almost every note already sits near a line. When quantizing seems to make a part worse, the grid value is usually the first thing to check.
Use partial quantize, often labelled strength or amount, which pulls each note part of the way toward the grid instead of snapping it hard onto the line. At full strength a note jumps all the way onto the grid; at 50 percent it moves halfway there. The part tightens up but keeps some of the small unevenness that makes it sound played rather than programmed.
Strength is the setting that saves a groove. A drummer or a keys player naturally sits a hair ahead of or behind the beat, and that tiny spread is a lot of what gives a part its feel. Snapping everything dead onto the grid erases it and can leave the music stiff. A lighter pull, say somewhere around a half or two thirds of the way, cleans up the obvious drift while leaving the human spread mostly intact. There is no correct number; you listen and back it off until it feels tight but still alive.
The other way to keep feel is to quantize to a groove rather than a rigid grid. Swing shifts every other subdivision a little later, which is what turns a straight run into a shuffle. Groove templates go further: they copy the timing, and sometimes the loudness, of a reference part or a classic drum machine, and snap your notes to that feel instead of to a straight grid. So rather than lining up perfectly, your part lines up with a groove that already breathes.
Quantizing MIDI is simple, because you are only moving note messages in time and nothing is re-recorded. Quantizing recorded audio is harder: the DAW has to detect each hit and stretch the actual sound to move it, using tools with names like Elastic Audio, Flex Time or Warp depending on the program. It tends to work well on clean, punchy material such as isolated drums, and it can smear or add artefacts on sustained or chord-heavy audio, so it usually wants a gentle touch and a listen for damage.
Skip quantizing, or use very little of it, when the timing itself is part of the feel. Hard quantizing can suck the life and groove out of a performance by flattening the small pushes and pulls that make a part sound human, so the stiff, on-the-grid version is not always the better one. It is a tool, not a rule, and plenty of good parts are left exactly as they were played.
Music that leans on feel is where a rigid grid does the most harm. A lot of jazz, funk, soul and live playing depends on notes sitting slightly ahead of or behind the beat: a laid-back snare, a bassline that leans forward, a chord that lands a touch late. Quantize all of that to a straight grid and you often get something tighter but duller, with the energy quietly removed. On the other hand, a lot of electronic and programmed music wants that machine-tight feel, so hard quantizing is exactly right there. The style decides.
You also do not have to treat it as all or nothing. You can quantize only some parts and leave others loose, for example locking the kick to the grid to hold the low end steady while the hats and the top line stay as played. You can quantize at a low strength so the timing tightens without fully snapping. Or you can leave the part alone and just drag the one or two obviously wrong notes into place by hand, which keeps the feel everywhere else.
Listen to the part before and after, and be honest about what changed. If quantizing made it cleaner but flatter, back off the strength or undo it. Timing that is slightly off is not the same as timing that is wrong, and telling the two apart by ear is worth more than any grid setting.
Quantizing only helps once there is a part on the track. The slow bit is coming up with the line and getting it in as notes you can then tighten, loosen or leave exactly where they fell. Everything above is a choice you make after the notes exist.
