How to use guitar tuner
- Choose your instrument and tuning, then check the reference pitch. A4 = 440 Hz is the usual starting point.
- Enable the microphone and pluck one string. Watch the cents reading: a negative number is flat, a positive number is sharp.
- Adjust gently until the reading is near zero. Tap a string button to hear its reference tone.
A little more about this tool
Start with standard E–A–D–G–B–E, or explore Drop D, DADGAD, open D, open G, open C and other alternate tunings. Custom notes need octave numbers so the tuner can distinguish low E2 from high E4. The nearest target string is chosen automatically. Quiet rooms and clean, sustained notes give the clearest reading. Headphones keep reference tones from feeding back into the microphone.
Does it work with bass and ukulele?
Yes. There are dedicated bass, five-string bass and ukulele presets, plus custom notes. Very low notes may be harder for small phone microphones to capture.
Is it really free?
Yes. Use this tool without an account, subscription or download. Audio files and microphone input stay on your device. Browser format support varies; MP3 and WAV are good starting points.
