Panning sets where a sound sits from left to right between your two speakers. Every channel in a mix has a pan control, and it decides how much of that sound goes to the left speaker and how much goes to the right. You use it to spread the parts of a mix across the space between the speakers, so they each get their own spot instead of stacking up in the middle, and the whole thing sounds wider and clearer.
Panning is one of the simplest and most powerful moves in a mix, and it works the same way in any DAW. The advice here is standard and tool-agnostic, so treat the positions as starting points and trust your ears, since every song sits a little differently.
Panning sets where a sound sits from left to right in the stereo field, the space between your left and right speakers. Every channel in a mix has a pan control, usually a knob or a slider marked left and right, and it sends more of that channel's signal to one speaker than the other. Turn it to the left and the sound moves toward the left speaker; leave it in the middle and both speakers play it equally, so it seems to come from a point dead centre between them.
Panning matters because it spreads the parts of a mix across that space so they stop fighting for the same spot. When everything sits in the centre, the parts pile on top of each other and the mix sounds narrow and crowded. Move them apart, a guitar to the left, a shaker to the right, and each one gets its own place to be heard. The result is a mix that sounds wider and clearer, and it is often the single quickest way to make a busy arrangement open up.
Panning is not the same thing as stereo width, though the two are easy to confuse. Panning takes a mono sound, one that is the same in both speakers, and places it somewhere from left to right. You pan a lead vocal to the centre; you widen a stereo synth pad. They work together, but they are different jobs, so it helps to keep them straight.
Keep the kick, snare, bass and the lead vocal in the centre. These are the anchor of the mix, the parts that carry the groove, the weight and the main message, so you want them planted solidly in the middle where both speakers share them equally and they feel like they are right in front of the listener.
There is a second reason for the low sounds. Low frequencies carry very little sense of direction, so your ears cannot really tell where a deep bass note or a kick is coming from. Panning them to one side does almost nothing for the stereo picture and only unbalances the mix, pushing more low energy into one speaker than the other. Centring the bass and kick also keeps them solid when the mix is folded down to mono, which is why the low end is almost always kept dead centre. The lead vocal usually sits dead centre for a different reason, that it is the focus of the song. Putting it in the middle gives it equal weight in both speakers and the same solid, up-front feel the kick and snare have. Once your anchors are centred, everything else in the mix has a stable core to be arranged around.

Spread everything else out toward the sides. A part that would clash with another in the centre often sits perfectly once you move the two of them apart.
Work in matching pairs where you can. If you pan a rhythm guitar out to the left, put something of similar weight, a second guitar, a tambourine, a keyboard, out to the right to balance it. Panning in pairs keeps the two sides roughly even, so the mix does not feel like it is leaning toward one speaker. Doubled parts are ideal for this, since you can record a part twice and pan the two takes hard left and hard right for a wide, balanced pair.
Some engineers keep it simple with an approach called LCR, which stands for left, centre and right. Instead of spreading parts to every position in between, they pan each one either hard left, dead centre or hard right. It sounds extreme, but it gives a clean, decisive image where every part has a clear place, and it avoids the muddle you can get when too many things sit at vague halfway positions. It is one option rather than a rule, but it is worth trying when a mix feels cluttered.

Whatever pattern you choose, keep the two sides roughly balanced in weight, so neither speaker feels heavier than the other, and check the mix in mono when you are done. Folding the mix to mono is the quickest way to catch a part that has drifted too far or a side that has become lopsided, and it makes sure nothing important disappears on a phone or a single speaker. If a part vanishes or the balance tips, ease it back toward the centre.
A balanced mix has about as much going on to the left as to the right, so it does not pull toward one speaker. Panning in matching pairs is the easy way to get there, and a quick mono check at the end confirms nothing has strayed too far or dropped out.
Pan law is a small volume adjustment your DAW makes as you pan a sound across the field. A sound sitting dead centre comes out of both speakers at once, so it adds up a little louder than the same sound sent hard to one side, where only a single speaker plays it. If nothing corrected for that, a part would seem to get quieter as you panned it away from the middle.
To keep the loudness steady as a sound moves from side to side, DAWs apply a small cut to the centre, often around 3 dB, so a centred sound and a hard panned one feel about the same level. That rule is called pan law. It usually happens automatically in the background, and most of the time you do not need to think about it.
It is worth knowing pan law exists, though, so you understand why a part can seem to shift in level as you pan it, and because some DAWs let you choose the pan law setting. That choice can matter if you move a project between programs, since a different setting can change how loud the centred parts sit. For everyday mixing you can leave it alone and simply trust your ears on the balance.
Pan law works quietly on its own, so the centre is not automatically louder than the sides. You almost never touch it, but knowing it is there explains the small level change you hear as a part moves across, and it is one thing to check when a project sounds different after opening it in another DAW.
Panning decides where a sound goes, but it works best when the sound itself is clean and focused to begin with. A tight, well defined part drops into its spot and stays there, while a woolly or already smeared sound is harder to place and tends to spread where you did not ask it to.
