How to mix drums

Short answer: mixing drums is about three things, balance, punch and space. You set the kick and snare first because they are the foundation, EQ each drum so it has its own room, compress the individual hits and then glue the whole kit on a shared bus, shape the transients for punch, pan the kit for width, and add a little room or reverb for depth. Group everything to one drum bus and you can treat the kit as a single instrument.

The balance matters more than any single setting, and the frequency figures here are approximate zones, not exact rules. Every kit, every sample and every song is a little different, so use your ears and treat the numbers as a starting point. None of this is tied to one product.

How do you start mixing drums?

Start with the kick and snare, because they are the foundation of the kit, and get their level and tone right before you touch anything else. The kick and snare carry the groove and most of the weight and impact, so they set the reference the rest of the kit sits around. Get those two balanced against each other first, then build the hats, toms and cymbals to fit around them.

Set levels before tone. Get a rough balance with the faders, the kick and snare sitting together at a sensible level, before you reach for EQ or compression. That way you are shaping a mix that already makes rough sense, rather than fixing one drum in isolation and finding it no longer fits when the others come up. A drum mix is a balance first and a set of processed channels second.

Then set the tone. A little EQ, and some compression if the hit needs it, gets the kick and snare sounding solid on their own. Keep it light at this stage. You are aiming for two sounds that already sit well together, so that when the rest of the kit arrives it has a clear, steady core to sit around.

Group to a bus early. Route every drum to a single drum bus, sometimes called a group or a submix, from the start. That gives you one fader for the whole kit and, later, one place to compress and shape it as a unit. We come back to what the bus lets you do at the end.

Kick and snare first

The kick and snare are the spine of a drum mix. Get those two balanced and sounding right against each other before you add the hats, toms and cymbals, and the rest of the kit has something solid to sit around. It is far easier than trying to balance the whole kit at once from a standing start.

How do you EQ each drum?

EQ each drum to do two jobs, clear out what it does not need and bring out the part that defines it, so every piece has its own space instead of fighting the others. The usual pattern is a high-pass to remove rumble a part never uses, a small cut to clear mud or a clash, and a gentle boost to lift the character. Cutting what is in the way usually does more than boosting what is missing.

The kick lives on two features: the low-end weight you feel in the chest, roughly 50 to 100 Hz, and the beater click that lets it read on small speakers, up around 2 to 5 kHz. High-pass the sub rumble below the weight that the kick does not use, keep or gently lift the weight, add a little click if the attack is soft, and clear a touch of boxiness around 300 to 500 Hz if it sounds cardboard.

The snare carries its body low, roughly 150 to 250 Hz, and its crack higher, around 3 to 6 kHz. Lift whichever the snare is short of: more body if it sounds thin, more crack if it does not cut through. A gentle cut in the low mids can clear boxiness, and a high-pass keeps the very bottom clean.

The hats and cymbals carry almost nothing useful down low, so high-pass them firmly. That single move clears space for the kick and snare and stops a wash of low-mid rumble building up under the kit. A little air up top can open them if they sound dull, but hats and cymbals are usually more about taming than boosting.

Most drum EQ is about fit, not solo sound. Where two parts clash in the same range, the kick and the bass in the low end, or the kick and the snare body in the low mids, a small cut on one to make room for the other keeps everything clear. A drum that sounds great alone can still muddy the kit, so judge each move with the whole thing playing.

Cut to make room

A lot of drum EQ is not about making one drum shine in solo, it is about making the whole kit fit together. If the kick and the snare body are both crowding the low mids, a small cut on one clears space for the other, and the pair reads more clearly than either did on its own.

How do you make drums punchy?

Punch comes from the transients, the short, sharp hit at the very front of each drum, so you protect and shape those with compression, transient shaping and parallel compression rather than just turning the drums up. A louder flat drum is still flat. Punch is about the balance between the hit and the tail, so that is what you work on.

Compress the individual hits with care. A compressor on the kick or snare can tighten it and add weight, but a fast attack clamps the very transient that gives the punch. A slightly slower attack lets the initial hit through before the compressor grabs the body behind it, which keeps the snap while still controlling the sound. Use a few dB of gain reduction and listen for whether it is adding punch or squashing it.

Shape the transients directly. A transient shaper lets you push a drum's attack up to add snap, or ease it down to soften a hit, and pull the sustain in to tighten a ringing tail. Because it works from the shape of the sound rather than a level threshold, it is often the most direct way to add or tame punch. Our guide on what a transient is covers how that works in full.

Use parallel compression for weight. Blend a heavily compressed copy of the drums quietly underneath the main, un-squashed kit, and you get body and weight without flattening the transients, because the loud, punchy peaks still come from the untouched signal. Protect the transient

The fastest way to kill punch is a fast compressor attack that clamps the hit before it is through. Whether you reach for a compressor, a transient shaper or a parallel channel, the goal is the same, keep the sharp front of each drum intact while you control the body behind it.

How do you give drums space and glue?

Space comes from panning the kit for width and adding a little room or reverb for depth, and glue comes from light compression across the whole drum bus so the separate pieces read as one kit. These are the finishing moves, once each drum sounds right and the kit is balanced.

Pan for width. Keep the kick and snare centred, since they anchor the groove and the low end, and pan the hats, toms and cymbals out toward the sides to open the kit up. Keep the picture consistent so the kit sounds like one instrument in a room rather than parts scattered across the stereo field. Wide where it helps, centred where it counts.

Room and reverb for depth. A touch of room or reverb places the kit in a space and adds depth, so it does not sound dry and stuck to the speaker. Keep it in proportion, since too much washes out the punch you just worked for, and a short room often does more for drums than a long reverb. Put it on a send so you control how much sits behind the kit.

Glue on the drum bus. Gentle compression across the whole drum bus, a couple of dB of gain reduction with a slower attack, moves the kit up and down together and makes the separate hits feel like one performance rather than a stack of parts. This is the glue people talk about, and it is a different job from the harder compression you use to punch up a single hit.

Group to one bus. Routing every drum to a single bus is what makes all of this possible: one place to compress, add space and ride the level for the whole kit at once. Once the balance inside the kit is right, that bus lets you treat the drums as a single instrument in the wider mix, moving them as one against the bass, the vocal and everything else.

Glue is not punch

The compression that glues a drum bus together is gentle and fairly slow, a couple of dB just to move the kit as one. It is a different move from the harder compression or transient shaping you use to add punch on a single hit. Doing both lightly, each at the right stage, is what makes a kit sound tight and whole.

Give your drums clean space to punch into

A drum mix does not live on its own. Half of whether the kit punches is decided by what plays around it, because a cluttered, full-range backing crowds the same space the drums need. Parts that stay in their own lane leave the kit room to hit, and everything above gets easier.
