Stereo width is how far a mix spreads across the space between the left and right speakers. A narrow mix feels like it is coming from one point in the middle; a wide mix seems to open out to the sides and wrap around you. You widen it by placing parts across that space with panning, by making the left and right channels slightly different, and by using sources that are already stereo, while keeping the low end centred so the bottom stays solid.
Width lives in the difference between what the two speakers play. The techniques here are standard and work in any DAW, but width is easy to overdo, so the goal is a mix that opens up without falling apart when it is played back in mono.
Stereo width is how far a mix spreads across the space between the left and right speakers. In a mono signal both speakers play exactly the same thing, so the sound seems to come from a single point in the middle, between them. In a stereo signal the two speakers can play different things, and that difference is what lets a mix seem to reach out to the sides. The area across which sounds can be placed, from hard left through the centre to hard right, is the stereo field.
Your ears work out where a sound sits mostly from small differences between the two channels, in level and in timing. If a part is a touch louder and arrives a touch earlier on the left, you hear it toward the left. If both channels are identical, you hear it dead centre. So width is not a single control you turn up. It is the result of how different the left and right channels are, and every technique for widening a mix is really a way of making them differ in a musical way.
The simplest tool for placing sounds in that field is panning. Panning sets how much of a part goes to the left speaker versus the right, anywhere from hard left to dead centre to hard right. Spreading parts across the field with panning is often most of what a mix needs: it gives each part its own spot, clears room in the centre, and makes the whole thing feel wider without any special processing. Width, in other words, usually starts with good panning rather than a plugin.
A mono sound is the same in both ears, so it sits in the middle. A wide sound is one where the left and right channels carry different information. Everything below is a way to create a useful difference between the two sides, which is why every one of them can also cause trouble if you push it too far.
Start with panning, then create width where you want more of it by making the left and right channels differ, either by using genuinely stereo sources or by adding small differences with double-tracking, short delays, chorus or mid-side processing. There is no single widen control that works well on everything, so it helps to know what each common technique does and where it can go wrong.

The most natural width comes from real differences rather than from a plugin. Double-tracking is the clearest example: you play a part twice and pan the two takes apart, and because no two performances are identical, the tiny variations between them give a wide, stable image that a single processed track struggles to match. This is why doubled guitars and layered backing vocals sound so much bigger than one track spread artificially.
The processing tricks all work by inventing a difference between the two sides. A short delay, often called the Haas effect, sends one channel a copy delayed by a few milliseconds; the ear reads that timing gap as width. A stereo chorus detunes and modulates copies of the signal to spread it out. Mid-side processing splits the signal into its centre and its sides so you can raise the sides on their own. These are useful, but each one leans on differences between the channels that can partly cancel when the mix is summed to mono, so they call for a careful ear.
The most reliable width, though, is width that is built into the source. An instrument that is genuinely stereo, or a good stereo reverb placing a part in a space, gives you an image that already sounds wide and generally survives mono better than width bolted on afterward. Reverb in particular does double duty: it adds both depth and width, and it is often what makes a mix feel three-dimensional rather than flat.
Because wide low frequencies make the bottom of a mix feel loose and unstable, and they are the most likely part of the spectrum to weaken or partly cancel when the mix is played in mono. The usual practice is to keep the lowest content, the bass and the kick, centred and mono, below somewhere around 100 to 120 Hz, so the foundation stays solid and consistent on any system.
There are two reasons this matters. The first is feel: low frequencies carry a lot of energy, and when they are spread wide the low end loses its anchor and the mix can feel like it is drifting rather than sitting on a firm base. Centring the bass and kick keeps the weight of the track where a listener expects it, right in the middle. The second is safety, which is the phase problem below. Wide low content relies on differences between the channels that can collapse in mono, and the low end is exactly where you least want a surprise.
Keeping the low end mono also helps clarity. When several parts pile low energy into the sides, the bottom of the mix gets crowded and cloudy, one of the causes covered in why a mix sounds muddy. Letting one instrument own the sub in the centre, and keeping the rest out of its way, keeps the low end both solid and clear. Many engineers do this with a mono-maker or a mid-side tool set to sum everything below a chosen frequency to the centre, but panning your low parts to the middle in the first place gets you most of the way there.
Always check the mix in mono. Flip the whole mix to mono and listen for parts that get quieter, thinner or vanish, because that is how phase problems from width techniques show up. Anything that nearly disappears in mono was leaning on a difference between the channels that cancels when the two sides are added together, and that is the main risk you are widening against.
This is the idea of mono compatibility: a mix that still sounds full and balanced when its two channels are summed to one. It matters because a lot of listening happens in or near mono, whether it is a single phone speaker, a smart speaker, a club system, or a laptop, and some streaming and broadcast paths fold audio down as well. A mix that sounds huge in stereo but falls apart in mono is a mix that will let you down on many of the systems people actually use.
Phase issues are the reason to keep checking. When the left and right channels hold copies of the same sound that are slightly out of step, adding them together makes parts of the sound cancel, so the level drops or the tone hollows out. Short delays, heavy chorus and aggressive mid-side boosts are the usual culprits because they all work by putting related but different signals on the two sides. If a part loses body in mono, ease off whatever is widening it, or reach for a technique that folds down more gracefully.
The other trap is over-widening. Pushing the sides too hard can make a mix sound impressive on first listen and then feel oddly weak and hollow, because the energy has been pulled out of the centre where the most important parts, the lead and the low end, usually live. If the middle of your mix feels empty or the vocal seems to sit behind everything, you have probably widened too much. Pull the sides back, keep the anchors centred, and treat width as something you add in moderation where it helps, checking in mono as you go, rather than a setting to max out.
