A time signature tells you how the beats in a bar are grouped. It is written as two numbers stacked one above the other, and you read them together: the top number is how many beats are in each bar, and the bottom number is which note value gets one beat. Here is what each number means, why 4/4 is by far the most common, and how 3/4, 6/8 and odd meters like 5/4 count and feel different.

A time signature is the pair of stacked numbers at the start of a piece that tells you how the beats in each bar are grouped. The top number counts how many beats are in a bar, and the bottom number tells you which note value gets one beat. A bar, also called a measure, is one of the repeating chunks the music is divided into, so the time signature sets how long each chunk is and how you count your way through it.
The time signature and the tempo answer two different questions. The time signature says how the beats are grouped inside each bar; the tempo says how fast those beats go. You can keep the same time signature and speed it up or slow it down, and you can hold the tempo steady and change the time signature. They are set separately, and you usually fix both before you start writing.
In most DAWs the time signature sits near the tempo at the top of the window, and it is normally left at 4/4 unless you change it. It controls where the bar lines fall and how the metronome counts, so the grid you write against follows whatever you set. Most of the music you already know stays in one steady time signature from start to finish, though some pieces do change it partway through.
The top number is how many beats are in a bar, and the bottom number is which note value gets one beat. Those are two separate jobs, and reading them together is the whole skill.
The top number is the easy one: it is simply the count of beats in each bar. A top number of four means four beats to a bar, a top number of three means three, and so on. You count up to that number and then the next bar starts again at one.
The bottom number takes a moment. It names the note value that counts as one beat. A 4 on the bottom means the quarter note gets the beat, an 8 means the eighth note gets the beat, and a 2 means the half note gets the beat. So the bottom number is not a count of anything; it is which kind of note you are counting. Put the two together and you can read any time signature: in 4/4 the top 4 says four beats to a bar and the bottom 4 says each beat is a quarter note, so a bar is four quarter notes. In 3/4 you get three quarter notes. In 6/8 the bottom 8 makes the eighth note the unit, so the numbers count eighth notes rather than quarter notes, which is why 6/8 groups and feels different, as the last section covers.

The ranges of what you can write are wide, but in practice a handful of these cover almost everything you will meet. The rows above are a starting point, not a rulebook, and the sections that follow walk through the common ones in turn.
4/4 is four quarter notes per bar, counted one two three four, and it is by far the most common time signature in Western music, so common that it is also called common time and is sometimes written as a C instead of the two fours. It is the default in most DAWs, and it carries the large majority of pop, rock, hip hop, house and dance music.
Four is an easy number to feel and to build on. It splits evenly into two halves and into four quarters, so drum patterns, chord changes and phrases fall into tidy groups of two, four, eight and sixteen bars with no awkward remainder left over. The familiar backbeat, with the snare on beats two and four, lives in 4/4, and so does the four-on-the-floor kick of house and techno. If you are not sure what a track is in, 4/4 is the safe first guess, and it will be right most of the time.
Inside a 4/4 bar the four beats are not all equal in weight. Beat one is the strongest, beat three is the next strongest, and beats two and four are lighter, which is the ladder of strong and weak beats that syncopation plays against. The time signature sets up that pattern of stresses; what you then choose to put on the strong and weak spots is a separate decision, and a large part of where groove comes from.
3/4 is three quarter notes per bar, the waltz feel; 6/8 is a compound meter felt in two groups of three eighth notes; and odd meters like 5/4 and 7/8 group their beats unevenly. They are the common ways out of 4/4, and each one counts a little differently.
3/4 has three quarter-note beats to a bar, counted one two three, one two three. That is the waltz, and it turns up in folk, country and plenty of ballads. It feels different from 4/4 because there is no even split down the middle: the bar turns over every three beats, which gives it a rolling, circling lilt rather than a square march.
6/8 has six eighth notes in a bar, but you rarely count all six. It is a compound meter, which means the beats divide into three rather than two, so the six eighth notes fall into two groups of three and you feel two main beats, each one a group of three. Count it as one two three, four five six, with the weight on the "one" and the "four." That rolling, lilting feel, common in ballads, blues shuffles and a lot of folk, is the giveaway of a compound meter.
Odd or complex meters have a top number that does not split evenly, like 5/4 or 7/8, so the beats group unevenly as a result. A bar of 5/4 has five quarter notes, usually heard as a group of three plus a group of two, or the other way round. A bar of 7/8 has seven eighth notes, often split into two, two and three. They are less common and can feel lopsided at first, but plenty of well-known pieces use them, and once you can feel where the uneven groups fall they count as naturally as anything else. For most pop, rock and dance music, though, 4/4 is still where you will spend the bulk of your time.
Everything above is something you count and feel by hand, and it is worth learning to hear whether a piece is in three, four or six. The slow part comes later, when you have to write a bassline or a pattern that lands in the right places for the meter you chose and holds together bar after bar.
