What are studio monitors?

Short answer: studio monitors are speakers designed for making music, built to reproduce sound as flat and as accurately as possible, so you hear a mix truthfully rather than flatteringly. Unlike hi-fi or consumer speakers, which are voiced to flatter the sound and make any song exciting, monitors try to hide nothing and hype nothing, so the choices you make on them are more likely to hold up on other systems. The common home type is the nearfield monitor, meant to sit close to you so you hear more of the speaker and less of the room, and monitors come either active, with a built-in amplifier, or passive, needing a separate one.

This is about what monitors are and how they differ from ordinary speakers, not a buying list, and every room, budget and way of working is different, so treat it as background rather than a rule. Monitors are one piece of a home studio rather than the whole thing, and they are a separate subject from mixing on headphones.

What are studio monitors?

Studio monitors are speakers designed for making music, built to reproduce sound as flat and as accurately as they can, so you hear a mix truthfully rather than flatteringly. That honesty is the whole point, and it is what separates them from the hi-fi systems and small computer speakers most people listen on.

Consumer speakers are voiced to flatter. A hi-fi speaker or a pair of computer speakers is usually tuned to sound exciting, with boosted bass, sparkly treble and a gentle scoop through the middle, because the job is to make any song you play sound good. That is lovely for listening, but it hides problems in your own mix, since the speaker is adding its own flavour on top of yours. Monitors aim for the opposite, adding as little flavour as they can so what you hear is closer to what is really there.

They come active or passive. Monitors are sold in two forms. An active, or powered, monitor has its amplifier built into the cabinet, so you plug your audio interface straight into it, and this is what most home setups use. A passive monitor has no amplifier of its own and needs a separate one, which is more common in larger or older studios. Neither is better on sound alone, but active monitors are simpler to set up at home.

Flattering is not the same as accurate

A speaker that makes everything sound great is doing you a quiet disservice while you work, because it flatters your mix as readily as it flatters a finished record. A monitor is trying to be accurate instead, which is less fun to listen to but far more useful when the goal is to hear what you have actually made.

Why are studio monitors flat?

Because you make better mix decisions when the speaker is honest. A flat response means the monitor is not hiding a weakness or hyping a strength, so what you hear is close to what is actually in the file, and a mix balanced on an honest speaker tends to travel well to other systems.

Flat means even. When people call a monitor flat, they mean its frequency response is even, so no part of the range, the bass, the mids or the treble, is pushed forward or held back by much. Sounds are reproduced at roughly the level they really sit at, rather than reshaped by the speaker on the way out.

An honest speaker points at real problems. On a speaker that flatters, you might cut or boost the wrong thing to fix a problem the speaker itself invented, and then wonder why the mix falls apart everywhere else. On a flat one, a problem you hear is more likely a real problem in the mix, so the moves you make to fix it are more likely to be the right ones.

Flat does not mean impressive. No speaker is perfectly flat, and a flat monitor often sounds a little plain or unexciting next to a consumer speaker. That is expected, and it is not a fault. The point is truthfulness, not enjoyment, and the plainness is a feature you are paying for rather than a shortcoming.

Plain on purpose

If your monitors sound less thrilling than the speakers on your phone or in your car, that is often a good sign rather than a bad one. You are hearing the mix with less flattery, which is exactly what lets you spot the parts that need work before anyone else does.

What are nearfield monitors?

Nearfield monitors are the small, close-range monitors most home studios use, meant to sit near you, roughly a metre away and angled in, so you hear mostly the speaker and much less of the room. Because the direct sound reaches your ears well before the room's reflections do, a difficult or untreated room matters less, which is why nearfields suit bedrooms and small rooms.

Nearfield describes the distance, not the technology. The word just means you listen up close. By keeping the speakers near and pointed at you, the sound you hear is dominated by the monitors themselves rather than by the space around them, and that is exactly what you want when the room is untreated.

Bigger monitors need a better room. Larger midfield or main monitors sit further back and fill a room, so they lean much harder on the room sounding good, which is why they belong in purpose-built studios rather than in a spare bedroom. For most people at home, a pair of nearfields is the sensible and affordable choice.

Nearfield keeps the room out of it

The reason nearfields are so popular at home is not the size, it is the distance. Sitting close means the speaker gets to your ears before the walls do, so an ordinary, untreated room has less chance to colour what you hear. It is the cheapest way to make a modest room usable.

How do you place studio monitors?

Put the tweeters at ear height, set the two speakers and your head so they form a rough equilateral triangle with each speaker angled in toward you, and pull them away from the walls where you can. Placement matters as much as the monitors themselves, and because the room colours what you hear, most rooms also need a little acoustic treatment before they can be trusted.

Tweeters at ear height. The tweeter is the small driver that makes the high frequencies, and highs are the most directional part of the sound, so you want the tweeters roughly level with your ears when you sit down to work. Speakers set too high or too low change the tone you hear and tilt every decision that follows.

Speakers and head in a triangle. Place the two speakers about as far apart as each one is from your head, and angle each one in so it aims toward you. That symmetric triangle is the position monitors are designed to be heard in, and it gives the most stable and honest stereo image.

Give them space, and treat the room. A speaker pushed hard against a wall or into a corner exaggerates the bass and muddies the low end, so give the monitors some breathing room and a symmetric spot where you can. Even then the room reflects sound back at you, and those early reflections blur what you hear, which is why some acoustic treatment, a few soft panels or heavy furnishings at the first reflection points around your seat, is usually needed. Monitors and headphones are complementary. The two are not rivals, and checking a mix on both is good practice, since each shows you something the other hides. Many people balance a mix on monitors and then confirm it on headphones, or the other way round. If a good room or a spot for speakers is out of reach for now, you can mix on headphones instead, which take the room out of the picture almost entirely. Hear it two ways

Getting the monitors into a triangle at ear height, giving them space, and softening the first reflections around your seat is most of the battle. After that, the simplest habit that keeps you honest is to check the same mix on headphones as well, so a decision that only sounds right on the speakers gets a second opinion before you trust it.
