The catch is that headphones present sound differently from speakers, so they mislead you in a few specific ways. If you do not know where those blind spots are, you will make choices that sound right in your ears and wrong everywhere else. If you do know them, and you build a couple of simple habits around them, headphones become a perfectly reliable place to work.

Neutral beats exciting. Whatever you pick, aim for a flat, even response rather than a hyped one. A pair that sounds thrilling straight out of the box is usually boosting the bass and the treble, which means you will mix against that boost and pull the real balance the wrong way to compensate.
What you already have can still work. You do not need expensive headphones to start. If you know how your pair leans, from experience or from a correction profile, and you check your mix elsewhere, an ordinary set can carry you a long way. Knowing your headphones well matters more than owning a perfect pair.
