How to make a mix that translates (the car and phone test)

Short answer: a mix translates when it sounds good on any system, not just the speakers you mixed on. Most mixes fail because every decision was made on one setup in one room, so the low end, the highs and the overall balance get tuned to that room and fall apart everywhere else. You fix it by checking the mix on several systems, especially a phone speaker and a car, leaning on a reference track, checking in mono, controlling the low end, and making sure the midrange carries the song.

Translation is about the mix holding up outside your studio, on small speakers, in a car, on a phone and on cheap earbuds. The advice here is tool-agnostic and every mix is different, so treat it as a way to stay honest, not a fixed rule.

What does it mean for a mix to translate?

A mix translates when it sounds good on any system you play it on, not just the one you mixed it on. The balance holds up whether it comes out of studio monitors, a laptop, a phone speaker, earbuds or a car, so the song still lands the way you intended wherever someone hears it.

The reason this matters is that almost nobody hears your music the way you do. You might finish a mix on good speakers in a quiet room, but your listeners are on a phone on a bus, in a car, on cheap earbuds or through a laptop. If the mix only works on your setup, most people never hear the version you signed off on.

Translation is not about making every system sound identical, because that is impossible. It is about the important parts of the mix, the vocal, the groove, the hook and the overall balance, surviving the trip. A mix that translates gives up some detail on a phone but still reads clearly. A mix that does not translate can turn thin, boomy or harsh enough that it stops working.

Why does a mix sound different on other speakers?

Because every speaker and every room changes what you hear, and the setup you mix on quietly hides some problems while exaggerating others. You end up tuning the mix to your room, and that tuning does not carry over to the next system.

You mixed on one system. If every decision was made on a single pair of speakers or headphones, the mix is shaped around their particular sound. Whatever those speakers underplay, you tend to overdo, and whatever they exaggerate, you pull back too far, so the mix leans the wrong way everywhere else.

An untreated room fools you. Most rooms are not acoustically treated, so they add their own bumps and dips, especially down in the bass. You hear the room and the mix together and correct for problems that are really the room, which bakes the opposite problem into the file.

Too much sub. Big speakers and headphones can reproduce deep bass that small speakers cannot. Pile on sub and it may sound full on your setup, then vanish on a phone or laptop that cannot play those low notes, or boom in a car where the cabin swells certain bass notes.

Harsh highs. Small speakers, earbuds and laptops push the upper mids and highs forward. A top end that sounds crisp on monitors can turn sharp and tiring on earbuds, because those systems emphasise the exact region where harshness lives.

Imbalances your ears got used to. Over a long session your ears adapt, so a mix that is slightly too bright, too dull or too heavy starts to sound normal. You stop hearing the imbalance, but a different system puts it straight back in front of you.

How do you test if a mix translates?

Play it on as many different systems as you can, especially the ones your listeners actually use, and pay attention to what changes. The two that catch the most problems are a phone speaker and a car, which is why people call them the phone test and the car test.

The phone test means playing your mix out loud through the tiny built-in speaker on a phone. That speaker plays almost no bass, so it strips the mix down to its midrange and shows you instantly whether the vocal and the main parts still carry the song. If the mix falls apart on a phone, it is usually leaning too hard on low end that most people will never hear.

The car test means listening in a normal car. A car is a small, oddly shaped space, so it swells some bass notes and swallows others, and road noise competes with the quiet detail. It is a rough but honest check of your low end and your overall balance, and it is close to how a lot of people really listen.

It is also worth checking in mono, since phones, many small speakers and a lot of club and public address systems sum the left and right together. Parts that sound big in wide stereo can drop in level or disappear when the sides collapse, which ties into how you handle stereo width. Beyond those, a laptop, cheap earbuds and a single small speaker each reveal something a little different.

None of these has to be a special setup. The point is simply to hear the mix somewhere other than the place you made it, before anyone else does, so the surprises happen while you can still fix them.

How do you fix a mix that does not translate?

Stop trusting one set of speakers, and build the mix so its balance survives being played anywhere. That means checking your work on several systems as you go, leaning on a reference, keeping the low end under control, and making sure the midrange carries the song rather than the extremes.

  1. Reference against a track you trust. Keep a professionally released song in a similar style in your session and compare often, matched to a similar loudness. It shows you where your low end, your highs and your balance drift from a record that already translates. Our guide on how to use a reference track walks through doing it well.
  2. Check the mix in mono. Flip the whole mix to mono regularly. If parts lose power or vanish, wide stereo effects are hiding a weaker mix underneath, and a mix that holds together in mono almost always translates better on the small, near-mono speakers most people use.
  3. Control the low end, and high-pass what does not need it. Too much sub is the most common reason a mix falls apart on small speakers or booms in a car. Roll off low end on parts that do not need it, and keep the bass and kick tight and even so no single low note dominates.
  4. Tame harshness in the presence region. If the top end feels sharp on earbuds, find the narrow band that stings, very roughly somewhere between 2 and 6 kHz, and ease it down a little. Small speakers push this region forward, so a top end that is smooth on monitors can be painful elsewhere.
  5. Let the midrange carry the mix. Small speakers are almost all midrange, so the parts that matter most, usually the vocal and the main hook, need to be present and clear in the mids. If the song only works because of deep bass or airy highs, it will not survive a phone.
  6. Take breaks so your ears reset. Step away regularly. Fresh ears hear imbalance that tired ears have adapted to, and coming back after a break is one of the cheapest ways to catch a mix that has quietly drifted.
The two tests that keep you honest

If you check on nothing else, play the mix through a phone speaker and in a car. Between them they expose the two things that break translation most often, a midrange that cannot carry the song and a low end that is out of control. If it holds up on both of those, it will usually hold up almost anywhere.

Start closer to translating
