How to set up a home studio

Short answer: a home studio is the small set of gear and space you need to make music at home, and you can start with very little. A laptop, a pair of headphones, a DAW and some software instruments is enough to write and finish a whole track, and you can add an audio interface, a microphone, a MIDI keyboard, studio monitors and a little room treatment later, as you actually need them. The software side does most of the heavy lifting now, so you do not need a room full of outboard gear to make finished music.

This is a practical starting point rather than a shopping list, and every room, budget and way of working is a little different, so treat the pieces here as sensible defaults to fit to your own case. None of it is tied to one program or one piece of gear.

What do you need for a home studio?

At its core you need three things: a computer, a program to record and arrange in, called a DAW, and a way to hear your work, which usually means headphones. Everything else on the list below, an audio interface, a microphone, studio monitors, a MIDI keyboard and some room treatment, is something you add when a particular job calls for it, not a thing you have to buy on day one. You can start tiny and grow the setup one piece at a time.

The computer and the DAW are the real foundation, and the two you should not skip. The computer runs the software, and the DAW is where the music actually happens, so a machine you already own plus a free or bundled DAW is often the whole starting kit. Everything after that is there to serve a specific need.

Headphones first, monitors later. A closed-back pair of headphones is the cheapest dependable way to hear what you are doing, and it works in a shared home at any hour. Studio monitors, meaning speakers made for hearing a mix honestly, are lovely to have once you have a room and a spot for them, but they are an upgrade rather than a starting point.

A microphone and an interface go together, and both only matter once you record real sound in the room. A MIDI keyboard just makes playing software instruments feel more natural, since you play the notes with your hands instead of clicking them in. It is a comfort, not a requirement, and a small two-octave one is enough for most people who mainly write and arrange.

Start with what you have

You almost certainly own a computer that can run a DAW, and a plain pair of headphones is cheap. That is a complete, working home studio already. Treat the interface, the mic, the monitors and the keyboard as things you buy one at a time, each when a real job in front of you needs it.

What is the cheapest way to start?

The cheapest way to start is the laptop you already own, a free or built-in DAW, a pair of headphones, and software instruments. That combination can write, arrange and finish a whole track without buying anything else, and it is where most people are best off beginning. You add hardware later, only when a specific job asks for it.

Use the computer you have. You rarely need a new or powerful machine to begin. A fairly recent laptop handles a lot of music before it runs out of room, and you can always freeze or bounce heavy parts if a project gets large. Buying a faster computer is a problem to solve later, if ever, not a thing to solve first.

Pick a free or bundled DAW. Most computers come with a capable music program, and the ones you pay for usually have a free or cut-down version that is more than enough to learn on and to finish real tracks. Start with whatever is already there or free, and only pay to upgrade once you hit a wall you can name.

Lean on software instruments and plugins. These are the sounds and effects that live inside the computer, and they stand in for what used to be racks of hardware. A good set of software instruments and plugins means you do not need a room full of outboard gear to make finished tracks, and many capable ones are free or inexpensive. This is the part that has changed home recording the most.

Add hardware only when a job needs it. An audio interface, a microphone, a MIDI keyboard or studio monitors are all worth buying at the point you have a clear use for them, and not before. Buying gear you have not yet needed is the easiest way to spend money without improving your music.

Buy for a reason, not by default

The honest cheapest studio is the one you already have plus a DAW and headphones. Let each purchase after that be pulled by a real need, a mic because you want to record singing, an interface because you are recording a guitar, rather than pushed by a gear list. Your music improves faster than your credit card does.

Do you need an audio interface?

Only if you record real sound or want the lowest possible latency. If you make music entirely inside the computer with software instruments and samples, you do not need an audio interface at all, and the audio your computer already has is fine. It is an upgrade you reach for when you start putting real sound into the machine, not a first purchase.

You want one if you record a microphone or a real instrument such as a voice, a guitar or a bass, since that is the main reason interfaces exist. You will also want one if the built-in latency, the small delay between playing and hearing yourself, is too high to perform in time, or if you want a cleaner, louder headphone output than a laptop socket gives you.

You do not need one if you work entirely in the box, meaning inside your DAW with software instruments, samples and MIDI, with no live sound coming in. Nothing analog is being recorded, so there is nothing for an interface to convert on the way in, and a great deal of electronic, ambient and beat-based music is made exactly this way.

A quick self test

Ask yourself one thing: in the next month, will you point a microphone at something or plug a real instrument into your computer? If yes, an interface will earn its place. If your music is going to live entirely inside software instruments and samples, the built-in audio is enough and your money is better spent elsewhere.

How do you set up the room?

Set your monitors at ear height, angled in so the two speakers and your head form a rough triangle, and pull them away from the walls where the room allows. Then soften the first surfaces that sound bounces off, the points on the side walls, the ceiling and the desk between you and the speakers, so those early reflections do not blur what you hear. If the room is poor or shared, good headphones let you skip most of this for now.

Place the two speakers and your listening spot so they make a rough equilateral triangle, each speaker about as far from you as they are from each other, and angle each one in to point toward your head. That is the position monitors are designed to be heard in.

Give the speakers some space. Pull them away from the wall behind them where you can, since a speaker pushed hard against a wall or into a corner exaggerates the bass and muddies the sound. A little breathing room, and a symmetric spot where each speaker is a similar distance from its side wall, gives you a more even and honest picture of the mix.

Treat the early reflections. The first bounce of sound off the side walls, the ceiling and the desk arrives just after the direct sound from the speakers and smears the stereo image. Softening those points with panels, or even with heavy furnishings, tightens what you hear. A simple way to find the side-wall points is to have someone slide a mirror along the wall while you sit in your listening spot: anywhere you can see a speaker reflected in the mirror is a surface worth treating.

Headphones sidestep most of this. Room setup only applies once you listen on speakers, and a decent pair of closed-back headphones takes the room out of the equation almost entirely. If you rent, share the space, or simply are not ready to treat a room, working on headphones is a perfectly respectable way to make finished music, and you can add monitors and treatment later.

Treat the listening spot, not the whole room

You are trying to clean up what reaches your ears at the one place you sit, not soundproof the building. Get the monitors into a triangle at ear height, give them some space, and soften the few first reflection points around you, and the room stops fighting you. It is a slow, optional upgrade you can make one panel at a time.
