An audio interface is the box that gets sound in and out of your computer with good quality and low latency. It turns a microphone or an instrument into audio your computer can record, and turns your computer's audio back into something your headphones and speakers can play. Whether you need one comes down to a simple question: are you recording real sound in the room, or making music entirely inside the computer? Plenty of people never need one at all.
This is meant to be a fair, factual explanation, not a sales pitch for a box. Your computer already has a basic interface built in, and for a lot of ways of making music that is enough.
An audio interface is a small box that connects between your instruments, microphones and headphones on one side and your computer on the other. Its job is to get sound in and out of the computer cleanly, with good quality and low latency. It is the piece that lets a microphone or a guitar become a recording, and lets that recording come back out of your speakers.
Under the hood it is doing conversion. Sound in the real world is analog, a continuous signal, while a computer only understands digital numbers. The interface converts the analog signal coming in into digital audio the computer can record, and converts the computer's digital audio back to analog on the way out to your headphones and monitors. That two way conversion is the core of what it is.
Here is the part people often miss: your computer already has a basic audio interface built in. The headphone jack, the built in microphone and the internal speakers are a simple interface. A dedicated audio interface is an upgrade in quality, in connections and in latency, rather than something without which no sound is possible at all. You are already using one every time you play music on your laptop.
An audio interface converts sound between the analog world and your computer, adds proper mic and instrument inputs, gives you clean headphone and speaker outputs, and keeps latency low while you record. Your computer has a basic version of this built in already. A separate interface is a better one, not a first one.
An audio interface does a handful of jobs at once. Most of these matter only when you are recording real sound.

Conversion and preamps are the everyday work. When you plug in a microphone, the preamp brings its weak signal up to a level worth recording, and the converter turns it into digital audio. Do this with a decent interface and the result is quieter and cleaner than a laptop's own input, which was never built for careful recording.
Low latency is the other big reason people reach for one. Latency is the small delay between a sound going into the computer and coming back out to your ears. If it is too high, singing or playing along feels like talking on a bad phone line. A good interface with proper drivers keeps that delay short. It depends entirely on how you make music, and for a lot of people the honest answer is no. You want an interface if you record microphones or real instruments, or if you want low latency monitoring and better headphone sound. You do not need one if you make music entirely inside the computer with virtual instruments and samples, or if you just want to try instruments in a browser.
You will want one if you record singing, a guitar, a bass, drums or any real sound in the room through a microphone or a cable. That is the main reason interfaces exist. You will also want one if you monitor yourself while recording and the built in latency is too high to play in time, or if you want a cleaner, louder headphone output than your computer gives you.
You do not need one if you work entirely in the box, meaning inside your DAW with software instruments, samples and MIDI, with no live sound coming in. Nothing analog is being recorded, so there is nothing for an interface to convert on the way in. A huge amount of electronic, ambient and beat based music is made exactly this way, on nothing more than the audio a computer already has.
And you certainly do not need one to try browser based instruments. Those play through whatever output your computer is already using, with nothing to install and nothing to plug in. The sensible rule is to buy an interface when you have a real reason to record something, not by default because a tutorial told you to. Many people making music today never record a live sound and get on perfectly well without one.
Ask yourself one thing: in the next month, will you point a microphone at something, or plug a real instrument into your computer? If yes, an interface will help. If your music is going to live entirely inside software instruments and samples, your money is better spent elsewhere, and the built in audio is fine.
If you have decided you need one, match it to what you actually record rather than to the longest feature list. The things that matter are the number of inputs, the quality of the preamps, whether it has phantom power, how it connects, and how stable its drivers are. A simple two input interface covers most people starting out.
Number of inputs. More inputs cost more, and most beginners only ever need one or two. One is enough for a single vocal or guitar at a time. Two lets you record a voice and an instrument together, or a stereo source. You only need more when you record several things at once, like a full drum kit or a band playing live.
Preamp quality. Cleaner preamps mean quieter recordings with less hiss, which matters most for quiet sources like a soft vocal. The difference is real but it is easy to overpay for, so it is worth reading a few honest reviews rather than chasing the most expensive option.
Phantom power. If you plan to use a condenser microphone, check the interface supplies phantom power, usually labelled 48V. Condensers need it to work at all. Dynamic microphones and instruments do not use it, so if you are only plugging in a guitar you can ignore this.
How it connects. USB is the most common connection and works well for most people, on both Mac and Windows. Thunderbolt can offer lower latency and higher channel counts, which suits larger studio setups, but it is not something a first interface usually needs. Pick the connection your computer actually has.
Stable drivers, and ASIO on Windows. The software driver matters as much as the hardware. On Windows, look for an interface with a reliable ASIO driver, which is what delivers dependable low latency; the generic Windows audio path is not built for it. On a Mac, the built in Core Audio handles this, so any class compliant interface tends to just work. Stable drivers are worth more than a long spec sheet.
Everything above is about getting real sound into a computer. If you are only playing software instruments, none of it applies to you yet, and that is the easiest place to start.
