What is phantom power?

Phantom power is the 48 volts that an audio interface or mixer sends up a microphone cable to power a condenser microphone. You will see it as a button or switch labelled 48V or +48V, and it travels down the same XLR cable that carries the audio, so no extra wire is involved. Condenser microphones need it to work, dynamic microphones do not, and it only ever matters when you are recording a real microphone in the first place.

This is a plain, factual explanation rather than a sales pitch. Phantom power sounds technical, but in everyday use it is a single switch you leave off until a condenser microphone needs it, then turn on and off in the right order.

What is phantom power?

Phantom power is the 48 volts an audio interface, mixer or standalone preamp sends up a microphone cable to power a condenser microphone. It is called phantom because it runs invisibly along the same cable as the audio, rather than needing its own separate supply or battery.

On the hardware it shows up as a button or switch labelled 48V or +48V, often with a small light next to it. Flip it on and the interface puts a steady 48 volts onto the microphone cable. The microphone uses that voltage to run, and the audio still travels back down the very same cable at the same time.

It is carried over a balanced XLR cable, the standard three pin microphone connection. Because the power and the audio share one cable, there is nothing extra to plug in. If your microphone connects some other way, such as straight into a USB port, then phantom power is not part of the picture, because the mic is being powered another way. The short version

Phantom power is 48 volts sent from an interface or mixer down the mic cable to run a condenser microphone. It shares the same XLR cable as the audio, it is switched on with a 48V button, and it is only needed by condensers. Everything else can ignore it.

Which microphones need phantom power?

Condenser microphones need phantom power, and dynamic microphones do not. Most ribbon microphones do not need it either, and some older ribbons can even be harmed by it, so the safe habit is to leave phantom power off unless a microphone actually needs it and you are sure it is safe for that mic.

Condensers need the 48 volts because their internal circuitry, and often the capsule itself, need power to work at all. Without it a condenser is silent or very nearly so. That is why the phantom switch matters most the moment you plug a condenser in.

Dynamic microphones make their signal on their own and do not use phantom power. Leaving 48V switched on generally does not harm a plugged in dynamic, so a setup with a dynamic and a condenser side by side is usually fine, but there is no reason to feed a dynamic phantom power on purpose.

Ribbon microphones are the ones to treat with care. Most modern ribbons do not need phantom power, and a few newer active ribbons do, so they are a mixed bag. The real caution is vintage ribbons: some older designs can be damaged by phantom power, so leave it off around any ribbon unless the maker clearly says 48V is safe for that model.

Only a condenser truly needs phantom power. Dynamics do not care, and some ribbons can be harmed by it. So the default habit that keeps every microphone safe is simple: leave 48V off, and switch it on only when the mic in front of you is a condenser, or the maker says the power is safe for it.

How do you use phantom power safely?

Connect the microphone first, then switch phantom power on. When you are finished, switch it off and wait a few seconds before you unplug anything. Doing it in that order avoids the loud pops that can startle you and, at worst, harm speakers, headphones or ears.

The reason is that switching phantom power on or off, or pulling a live cable, can send a sharp thump through the system. If your monitors or headphones are turned up, that thump can be very loud. Powering the mic up before you raise the level, and down before you unplug, keeps those spikes out of your speakers and out of your ears.

A simple routine works every time. Plug the mic in with the monitors and headphones turned down, switch on 48V, then bring the level up. To pack down, turn the level down, switch 48V off, wait a few seconds for the voltage to drain, and only then unplug the microphone. Give a condenser a moment after you switch 48V on, too, since some take a second or two to settle before they sound right.

A safe order, every time

Plug in, then power on. Power off, wait, then unplug. Keep the monitors low while you do either. That order costs you nothing and it is the single easiest way to avoid a loud pop reaching your speakers or your ears.

Do you always need phantom power?

No. Phantom power only matters when you record with a condenser microphone. If you are using a dynamic mic, or you are not recording a real microphone at all, you can leave it switched off and forget about it.

A great deal of music is made with no microphone in sight, entirely inside the computer with software instruments and samples. Nothing is being recorded through a cable, so there is no capsule to power and phantom power never comes into it. The same is true when you try instruments in a browser, where the sound is made on the computer and there is nothing to plug in.

The quick rule

Recording a condenser mic? Switch 48V on. Using a dynamic, or making music entirely in software? Leave it off. Phantom power is only ever a question when a real condenser microphone is in the room.

Make finished music with no microphone at all

Everything above only starts to matter once you point a real microphone at something. If you are making music inside the computer, none of it applies to you yet, and that is the easiest place to begin.
