A drone is the simplest powerful sound in music: one tone held long enough to become a place. It anchors most ambient and a great deal of film scoring, and it asks almost nothing of you technically. If you can hold a note and be patient, you can build one.
Applies to any synth, any DAW, or a browser instrument. The ideas are the technique. The instrument at the end is just the fast way to run it.
A drone is a sustained tone or chord that holds underneath everything else and does not move, giving the rest of the music a fixed floor to rest on. It usually sits on the root of the key, so before a single melody arrives the drone has already told your ear where home is and what the mood will be.
It is one of the oldest devices in music. Bagpipes have pipes that sound a constant note while the melody plays over them. The Indian tanpura does nothing but ring an open drone under a raga. The hurdy-gurdy, the didgeridoo and the held pedal note under an organ chorale all do the same job. The idea is ancient because it works: a note that never stops becomes the ground the ear stands on.
In ambient the drone is often the whole piece, a bed you can leave running for an hour. In film it is quieter and more hidden, holding tension, dread or vast open space under a scene without anyone noticing a "cue" has started. Either way its job is the same, to set a key and a feeling and then hold them steady.
Hold one note, thicken it with octaves and a fifth, then keep it slowly moving so it never sounds like a dead, looped tone. That is the whole recipe. Everything below is detail on those three steps.
Pick the root of your key and hold it. The source can be almost anything that can sustain: a synth pad, a bowed string, an organ, a held vocal, or a short sample looped so it never stops. Long attack, no release, no rhythm. This single held note is already a drone.
One note on its own is thin. Copy it into other registers to give it body and air, and add the fifth above the root for a fuller, open sound.

Leave out the third. The third is the note that makes a chord sound major (happy) or minor (sad). Drop it and you get an open fifth, which stays neutral and ambiguous, which is exactly why drones lean on it. You can add a third later if you want to commit to a colour, but you rarely need to.
A drone that truly does not move is a dead tone the ear switches off. Three cheap ways to keep it breathing without changing the note:
Layer a second sound with a slightly different timbre, or a whisper of noise or air, so the drone is not one flat colour. Then add reverb, large and long. A hall or a cathedral setting blurs all your layers into a single body and places the drone in a room. This is the step that turns a held chord into an atmosphere.
Once the drone is stable, a single note a step or a semitone away from the root, kept low and quiet in the mix, adds tension without breaking the calm. This is how film scoring makes a drone feel uneasy rather than peaceful. Use one, keep it soft, and it reads as unrest rather than a wrong note.
Keep one thing always moving, but slowly enough that the ear never settles and never catches an exact repeat. A held pad is static and a short loop repeats until attention lets go. A good drone lives in between, always familiar, never quite identical.
Move over minutes, not seconds. A filter opening across two minutes, a layer fading up over ten, gives the piece an arc you never had to draw. If a control moves every bar, the ear stops hearing it as movement and it just becomes wobble.
Use layers of different lengths. If you loop the parts, give them lengths that never line up, seven seconds against eleven, or let them free-run with no loop point. They drift out of phase and the texture is always in a slightly new place. This is the old tape-loop trick and it is the heart of generative drones.
Change one thing at a time. Widen the panning, bring a quiet upper voice in and later retire it, speed the detune beating up and slow it back down, add and remove an overtone. One slow change at a time reads as a living surface. Several at once reads as fidgeting.
Let it breathe. Swell the whole drone up and let it recede, like a very slow breath. Dynamics alone, with the notes never changing, can hold a listener for a long time.
Sit it low and quiet in one register, underneath the dialogue and everything else, and let it hold the emotional temperature of the scene without drawing attention. A drone under picture is felt more than heard, and that is the point.
Stay out of the way of the voice. Speech lives roughly between 300 Hz and 3 kHz. Keep the body of the drone below or above that band, or dip those frequencies out of it, and dialogue stays clear while the drone still fills the room underneath.
Match the interval to the feeling. An open fifth reads as neutral, calm or vast. A minor second or a cluster low in the mix reads as dread. Pick the colour to fit the scene, then let it hold while the picture does the rest.
Let it run long and glue the cuts. One continuous drone under a sequence smooths the jumps between shots, because the ear hears one unbroken sound even as the image changes. Swell it a little as tension rises, pull it back when the scene breathes, and duck it gently under important lines. Kept low and steady, it does an enormous amount of work while seeming to do almost nothing.
