A soundscape is the sound of a place rather than a song. No hook, no beat, no chord changes to follow, just an atmosphere you can sit inside. You build one by layering sounds and shaping the space around them, and the craft is mostly in what you leave out.
Applies to any synth, any DAW, or a browser instrument. The ideas are the technique. The instrument at the end is just the fast way to run it.
A soundscape is atmosphere and texture rather than melody or beat. It is a designed environment of sound, a place built for the ear, with no tune to hum and no rhythm to tap along to. It is the sound of a location or a feeling held in time: a room, a forest at night, the inside of a machine, a mood with no name. Instead of arranging notes into a phrase, you arrange textures into a space.
It turns up wherever a sense of place matters more than a tune. Film and game scoring lean on it to sit a mood under a scene, ambient music is often nothing but soundscape, and installation and meditation pieces are built the same way. In all of them the sound is not there to be followed. It is there to surround you.
A tune asks you to listen forward, waiting to hear where it goes. A soundscape asks nothing. It simply is, which is why it can run for an hour without wearing out its welcome, and why the skill sits closer to painting or set design than to songwriting.
Layer three kinds of sound: field recordings and found sounds for a sense of place, drones and pads for a harmonic bed, and heavily processed samples for texture and detail. Most soundscapes are some blend of those three, and you rarely need many of each.

The processed layer is where most of the character comes from, and it is worth spending time there. Take a short, ordinary sample and pull it apart:
For the sustained middle, a drone or a slow pad does the harmonic work, holding one tone or an open chord under everything and setting the key before anything else arrives. Two or three chosen well, sitting in different registers, go further than a dozen fighting for the same space.
Place every layer in a shared space with reverb and delay, spread them across the stereo field with panning and width, and leave gaps so the space can be heard. Depth is the difference between a flat wall of sound and a room you feel you could walk into.
Reverb puts everything in one place. A large, long reverb is the main tool for depth. Send all your layers to a shared reverb and they start to sound like they were recorded in the same room, blurred into a single body rather than a stack of separate files. A longer decay reads as a bigger space. This one step does most of the work of turning layers into an atmosphere.
Delay pushes sounds back. Echoes trail a sound off into the distance and add repetition without you playing anything twice. A long delay on a sparse detail sends it receding into the space behind the bed, which is where a lot of the sense of size comes from.
Panning and width place things left to right and near to far. Do not stack everything in the centre. Spread the wide, ambient layers out to the edges and keep the grounding sound nearer the middle. Depth front to back comes from level and reverb: quieter and more reverberant reads as further away, louder and drier reads as close. Placing elements this way is what makes a soundscape feel three dimensional rather than pasted flat.
Leave space. The most common mistake is filling every gap. A soundscape needs silence and near silence to breathe. Gaps are where the ear rests, and they are also where the space becomes audible, because you only really hear the size of a room in the quiet moments. A wall of sound has no depth, because there is nothing for the distance to sit against.
Let it evolve slowly with modulation, build in contrast so it is not one even texture, and give it a focal sound the ear can follow. A soundscape that never changes stops being heard within a minute, the same way you stop hearing a fan once it has been on for a while.
Modulate slowly. Put slow movement on the sounds that are already there: a filter opening and closing over a minute, the level of a layer drifting up and down, a gentle wobble on pitch. Set these to move over tens of seconds or minutes, not beats. If a control moves fast enough to tap along to, it stops reading as atmosphere and starts sounding like an effect.
Let the layers drift. If you loop sounds, give them lengths that never line up, so the combination is always in a slightly new place and takes minutes to come round. Free running layers with no loop point do the same thing. This is how a texture keeps playing itself without you touching it, and it is the heart of generative ambient.
Build in contrast. One even texture at one even volume is a wash. Let it grow dense and then thin out, brighten and then darken, swell and recede like a very slow breath. That contrast is what gives an hour of sound a shape, even when nothing you would call a melody ever happens.
Give it a focal sound. Hand the ear one thing to hold onto. A recurring detail, a distant bell, a bird, a creak, a single note that returns now and then, stops the soundscape being featureless. It does not need to be loud or frequent. One small point of focus against a wide bed is the difference between a place and a fog.
Leave it playing and walk away for two minutes. If you come back and it sounds exactly as you left it, it has quietly become wallpaper the ear has switched off. Something should have moved, opened or drifted while you were gone, even if you cannot say quite what. Movement you clearly notice is too fast. Movement you only sense is about right.
