Layering is stacking two or more sounds so they play together as one. Done well it turns thin, single patches into something big and rich, a fat bass, a huge lead, a thick pad. The trick is not piling on more of the same, but choosing sounds that each cover a different job, so they add up instead of fighting. Here is how to pick the layers and keep them clean.

Layering means combining two or more sounds into one bigger, richer sound, so they play together and are heard as a single instrument rather than as separate parts. The point is not to make one sound louder but to stack layers that complement each other, each covering a different frequency range or a different job, so together they add up to more than any of them alone.
The most common mistake is layering two sounds that do the same thing. Stack two similar basses and you mostly get one louder, muddier bass. Stack a clean sub under a brighter, mid-character bass instead, and each one covers a range the other leaves open, so the result is fuller and clearer at once. That is the whole idea in miniature: pick layers that fill different gaps.
Some familiar shapes turn up again and again. A clean low layer plus a bright character layer. A sustained body layer plus a short attack or click layer that gives the sound its start. Several pads spread across octaves for a wide, rich bed. In every case the layers are chosen to sit in different places, so the ear reads them as one big sound rather than a pile of competing parts.
Pick layers that each do a different job, so together they cover the whole sound without doubling up. The reliable way to think about it is by frequency range: give each layer a band to own, and let the layers add up rather than compete for the same space.
A clean sub layer holds the low weight while a second, brighter bass carries the character and cuts through on small speakers that cannot reproduce the sub at all. A sustained body layer gives the tone while a short transient click or noise burst on top supplies the attack that makes the sound read clearly. Several pads can spread across octaves, a low one for warmth, a mid one for the chord and a high one for air, voiced so they do not bunch up into mud. In each case the layers are complementary, not identical.

You do not need all of these at once. Two well-chosen layers, one for weight and one for character, already do most of the work. Add a third only when you can name the gap it fills. If a new layer does not clearly cover a range the others miss, it is probably just adding volume and mud, not richness.
Give each layer its own frequency space and keep them tight in tune and in time, so they lock together instead of smearing. Most layering problems come down to two sounds fighting for the same band, drifting out of tune, or arriving slightly apart, and each of those has a simple fix.
Carve each layer with EQ. Give each layer a band to own. High-pass the bright character layer so it stops muddying the sub, and dip a band in one layer where another needs room, so they are not both crowding the same frequencies. When each layer has its own space they add up cleanly instead of clouding one another.
Keep them in tune and in time. Layers only fuse if they agree. If one is slightly out of tune, or its start arrives a fraction late, the ear stops hearing one sound and starts hearing two, and the layer smears rather than locking. Match the tuning exactly and line up the start of every layer, especially when you are stacking samples.
Watch phase when layers are similar. When two layers are close in tone and pitch, their waveforms can partly cancel, and the stacked sound gets thinner instead of fuller, most audibly in the low end. Pan and detune for width. Spreading layers across the stereo field, or detuning them slightly against each other, makes the stack feel wider and thicker. Keep the low layers centred, though, since very wide bass can weaken or partly vanish when a track is summed to mono.
Group the layers to a bus. Route all the layers to a single bus so you can treat the stack as one sound. Level them against each other, then EQ and compress the whole group at once so it moves and glues as a unit. When it is working, you can print the bus as a single part and stop thinking of it as separate layers at all.
Layering is how you build sounds bigger than any single patch: fat bass, huge leads, thick pads and punchy drums. Anywhere one sound feels thin, or is missing part of the range, a well-chosen second layer fills the gap without you just reaching for the volume.
Fat bass. Stack a clean sub for the low weight with a brighter, mid-character bass for the part that cuts on small speakers, so the bass is felt on big systems and still heard on phones and laptops.
Huge leads. Layer two or three lead sounds, detuned and spread, or add a copy an octave up, so the lead reads as wide and powerful instead of thin and alone at the top of the mix.

Punchy drums. Layer a short transient click or a noise burst on top of a kick or a snare, so the hit reads clearly through a busy mix without simply being turned up. The click supplies the punch at the start; the original hit supplies the body and weight underneath.
Mute the layers and bring them back one at a time. Each one you add should make the sound clearly bigger or clearer in a way you can name, more low weight, more bite, a sharper start, more air. If a layer comes in and the sound just gets louder or muddier with nothing new, it is covering a range something else already owns. Cut it, or carve it a space of its own with EQ, rather than leaving it to fight.
