A pad is the soft, sustained sound that sits behind a track and fills the space, the wash of chords under a vocal, the warm bed under a film scene. It asks for patience rather than speed: no fast fingers, no solo, just a held chord shaped until it breathes. If you can hold three notes, you can build a lush pad.
Applies to any synth, any DAW, or a browser instrument. The ideas are the technique. The instrument at the end is just the fast way to run it.
A pad is a sustained chord with a soft attack and a long release, wide and rich enough to fill the background without demanding attention. Where a pluck or a stab starts sharply and stops, a pad fades in, holds through the whole chord, and tails off slowly, so one chord melts into the next and the sound is always there underneath.
The richness comes from thickness and space rather than from any single clever tone. Most pads are built from several oscillators detuned slightly against each other, or from layered samples, so the sound shimmers instead of sitting still. A gentle low-pass filter rounds off the harsh top so nothing bites. Width from chorus, unison or stereo spreads it across the field, and reverb and delay push it back into a space so it feels like depth rather than a flat wall.
The last ingredient is slow movement. A pad that is completely frozen is a held chord the ear switches off. A pad that drifts, a filter opening over several bars, the detune shimmering, keeps just enough life to stay interesting for minutes. Hold, soften, widen, and keep one thing slowly moving, and a plain chord becomes a pad.
Start with a sustained tone, thicken it with detuned voices, soften the attack and lengthen the release, roll off the top with a low-pass filter, widen it, then place it in reverb. That is the whole recipe. Everything below is detail on those steps.
Pick a waveform with harmonics to work with. A sawtooth is the classic pad starting point because it is bright and full before you filter it; two saws are the backbone of countless warm pads. Softer, hollow tones come from a triangle or a filtered square. The source can also be a sample or a held recording, as long as it can sustain without stopping.
One oscillator on its own is thin. Add a second and a third and detune them a few cents apart, or turn up a unison setting that stacks several copies of each note and spreads them. Those copies beat gently against each other, and that slow shimmer is most of what makes a pad sound lush rather than flat. A little goes a long way; too much detune turns warmth into seasickness.
The envelope is what turns a sustained tone into a pad. Slow the attack so the sound fades in over a second or more instead of hitting, and lengthen the release so notes ring on and overlap after you let go. A high sustain keeps the level steady while a chord is held. These four settings do more to say "pad" than any oscillator choice.

Add a chorus to smear the copies across the stereo field, or a short stereo delay with slightly different times left and right. Then put the whole thing in a large reverb, a hall or a long plate, and let the tails run. Width makes it feel big; reverb places it in a room and turns a held chord into an atmosphere.
How you spread the notes matters as much as the sound. Put the root low, then open the rest of the chord out across two or three octaves rather than bunching it into a tight cluster. A wide, open voicing rings clearly and sounds lush; a dense cluster low down just turns to mud.
Thickness and mud come from the same place, the low mids where every detuned voice and low octave piles up. Roughly 200 Hz to 500 Hz is where a stacked pad clouds over. High-pass the pad to clear the very bottom, dip that low-mid band with an EQ, and keep the voicing open so the notes are not fighting each other down low. Then let one voice keep moving, a slow detune or a filter drifting, so the pad stays alive without getting thicker. Lush is width and movement, not more low end.
Keep one thing always moving, but slowly, over bars rather than beats, so the ear never settles and never catches an exact repeat. A frozen pad is a held chord attention lets go of. A pad that drifts stays familiar and never quite identical, which is what holds a listener for minutes.
Sweep the filter slowly. Put a slow LFO on the low-pass cutoff, or draw a long filter movement by hand, so the tone brightens and darkens like light moving across a wall. Set it to move over several bars. If the cutoff wobbles every beat it stops reading as movement and just becomes an effect.
Move more than one thing, gently. A slow LFO on pitch adds a faint vibrato or widens the detune; a slow auto-pan drifts the sound side to side; a moving wavetable position slowly shifts the timbre. Any of these, kept subtle and slow, keeps the surface in motion without changing the chord.
Layer parts of different lengths. Stack two pads with movement set to slightly different speeds, or let their filters and LFOs free-run so they never line up. They drift out of phase and the texture is always in a slightly new place. This is the old tape-loop idea and it is the heart of an evolving pad.
Change one thing at a time. Open the filter over a whole section, bring a quiet upper layer in and later retire it, widen the reverb, speed the detune beating up and slow it back down. One slow change at a time reads as a living pad. Several at once reads as fidgeting.
Sit it behind everything, filtered and level so it fills the gaps without competing with the lead, the vocal or the bass. A pad is glue, not a feature. The mix problems it causes are almost always because it is too loud, too wide down low, or crowding the low mids, and each of those has a simple fix.
High-pass it to clear room for the bass. A pad rarely needs the bottom octave. Roll off the low end with a high-pass filter so the bass and kick own that range, and the pad stops muddying the foundation. Keep the lowest content centred rather than wide, since very wide bass turns weak or disappears on some speakers.
Carve the low mids and the vocal range. Dip the pad around 200 Hz to 500 Hz to clear the mud, and make a little space where the lead sits by easing back the pad in that band. You are not trying to hear the pad clearly; you are trying to feel it while everything else stays clear.
Let it duck under the lead. Sidechain the pad gently to the vocal or the lead, or automate its level down, so it steps back when the important part plays and swells back into the gaps. A pad that breathes with the arrangement fills the track without ever getting in the way.
Keep it wide but mono-safe. Width up top makes a pad feel big and lush, but check it in mono to be sure the detune and chorus are not cancelling out. Wide on top, solid and centred at the bottom, quiet enough to feel rather than hear, and the pad does a great deal of work while seeming to do almost nothing.
