Short answer: depth is the sense of front-to-back space in a mix, some sounds sitting close and upfront and others further back. Your ear judges distance from a handful of cues, mainly level, reverb and pre-delay, and how much high end a sound keeps, so you shape those to place each part near, in the middle or far. Keep the lead and the kick and snare upfront and dry, let pads and effects sit back, and the mix gains a front-to-back dimension instead of sitting on one flat plane.
This is about front-to-back distance, which is a different thing from stereo width, the left-to-right picture. The settings here are starting points, not exact rules, since every sound and every mix is a little different, so use your ears. None of this is tied to one product.

A mix with depth feels like a real scene, with things at different distances from you, rather than a flat wall where every part is pressed up against the speaker at the same distance. It is one of the things that separates a mix that sounds pasted together from one that sounds like a place.
Your ear works this out the same way it does in a real room. A sound that is close reaches you loud, dry and bright, with its full high end intact. A sound that is far away reaches you quieter, wrapped in the reflections of the room, and a little duller, because the air and the distance have worn the top off it. A mix borrows those same cues. By making a part quieter, adding more space around it and rolling a little off the top, you tell the listener it is further away, and by keeping a part loud, dry and bright you keep it up front.
So depth is not one control. It is the result of a few small moves that all point the same way, telling your ear how far off each sound is. The rest of this guide is about which cues do that and how to use them together.
Depth is front-to-back, how near or far a sound feels. That is a different dimension from stereo width, which is the left-to-right spread across the speakers. The two work together to build a three-dimensional picture, but you shape them with different tools, so it helps to think about them separately. Four main cues tell your ear how far away a sound is: how loud it is, how much reverb sits around it and its pre-delay, how much high end it keeps, and any delay that sets it into a space. They stack on top of each other, and the more of them agree, the more convincing the distance.
Level is the strongest and simplest cue. A quieter sound reads as further away, a louder one as closer, exactly as it does in life. Just pulling a fader down a little pushes a part back in the depth of the mix, and it is often the first thing to reach for before any effect. This is why the lead and the main rhythm parts tend to be the loudest things in a mix, and why the parts meant to sit behind them are set lower.
Reverb and pre-delay place a sound in a space. A dry sound with almost no reverb feels close and in your face, while the same sound with more reverb feels set back into a room. The detail that decides how far back is pre-delay, the short gap between the dry sound and the start of its reverb. A longer pre-delay lets the dry sound land clearly before the space arrives, which keeps a part upfront even with a fair amount of reverb on it. A shorter pre-delay, where the reverb arrives almost with the sound, glues the part into the space and pushes it back. So more reverb with a short pre-delay sends a sound far away, while a longer pre-delay holds it near even as you add size. High-frequency roll-off is the quiet one that makes the rest believable. In a real space, distance and air wear the high frequencies off a sound, so a far-off sound is duller than a close one. You can copy that with an EQ, gently rolling off the top of a part to push it back. It is subtle, and it works best alongside level and reverb rather than on its own, but it is often what stops a quietened, reverbed part from still sounding close and stuck to the front. A close, upfront part, by contrast, keeps its full high end.
Delay is the other way to put a sound in a space. A short echo, or a longer one tucked low under a part, gives it room and a sense of distance much as reverb does, and it can push a part back without the wash a big reverb adds. Used quietly it sits a part into the mix; used more openly it becomes an effect in its own right. Like reverb, it is usually best on a send so several parts can share it.

None of these has an exact figure, because the right amount depends on the sound and how far back you want it. Treat the table as which way to turn each control, not how far, and judge the distance by ear with the whole mix playing.
To push a sound back, combine the cues rather than leaning on one: turn it down a little, add more reverb with a short pre-delay, and gently roll off the top. No single move on its own is as convincing as the three together.
Depth is most believable when the cues agree with each other. A sound that is quieter but still bright and dry sends your ear a mixed message, and it tends to sound small rather than far away. Turn the same part down, wrap it in a little more reverb with a short pre-delay so the space arrives with it, and roll a touch off the high end, and now every cue points the same way and the part sits convincingly at the back.
To bring something forward you do the opposite. Keep it loud, keep it dry, keep it bright, and give any reverb on it a longer pre-delay so the dry sound lands first before the space blooms behind it. A part treated this way stays close and clear no matter what is going on behind it, which is exactly what you want for the sounds carrying the song.
The convincing part is getting the cues to point the same way. Quieter, more reverb with a short pre-delay, and a little less top together read as distance. Any one of them alone reads as a smaller or thinner sound, not a further one. So when a part refuses to sit back, check that all three are moving together rather than pushing one of them harder.
Think of the mix in three layers, near, middle and far, and place each part in one of them, keeping the lead and the kick and snare upfront and dry while pads, textures and effects sit back. Deciding roughly where each part belongs stops everything from piling up at the same distance.
The near layer is the parts you want closest to the listener, loud, dry and bright: usually the lead, the vocal, and the kick and snare that anchor the groove. The far layer is everything meant to sit behind them, quieter and wrapped in space: pads, textures, ambient parts and effect returns. The middle layer holds the parts in between, present but not out front. You do not need to be rigid about it, but a rough plan of who sits where gives the mix its front-to-back shape.
Keeping the anchors upfront and dry matters most. The lead and the kick and snare carry the song, so they should be the closest and clearest things, with little or no space on them. If you reverb the lead as heavily as the pads, it drifts back and loses its grip on the mix. Save the reverb, the roll-off and the lower levels for the parts that are meant to support, and the front of the mix stays clear while the back fills with depth.
Depth and width then work together. Depth places parts near or far, front-to-back, while width spreads them left to right, and a mix that uses both feels like a real space with room in every direction rather than a flat line of sounds. Get the front-to-back layers sitting right first, and the stereo picture has something solid to spread across.
Picture the mix as three layers of distance. Near is the lead and the kick and snare, loud, dry and upfront. Far is the pads, textures and effects, quieter and set back in reverb. Middle is everything else. Placing each part in a layer, rather than treating them all the same, is what gives a mix its front-to-back dimension instead of one flat plane.
