What is resonance?

Resonance is when a system emphasises certain frequencies so they ring louder and longer than the rest. On a synth filter it is the control that makes a cutoff sweep squelch and sing. In a room or a mix it is also the boxy, ringing note you often want to remove. Same behaviour, two very different jobs.

Resonance is a behaviour, and on a filter a parameter, not a device in its own right. What follows is tool-agnostic: the idea works the same on any synth, sampler, EQ or plugin, in any DAW or a browser instrument. The examples here are illustrations, not fixed rules, and every sound and room is a little different.

What is resonance in audio?

Resonance is when a system emphasises certain frequencies so they ring louder and longer than the frequencies around them. Almost anything that carries sound, a filter circuit, the body of a guitar, a room, a metal panel, has frequencies it responds to more strongly than others. When energy arrives at one of those frequencies, the system holds onto it and lets it go slowly, so that frequency stands out and takes longer to fade. That build-up and slow release is resonance.

It helps to keep one thing straight from the start. Resonance is a behaviour, or on a synth a parameter, not a tool in its own right. A filter is the tool; resonance is one of the things a filter can do and, usually, a knob that controls how much it does it. In the physical world nobody sets resonance at all, it is simply how objects and spaces behave. So when people say a sound is resonant, they mean it is ringing at a frequency it favours, whatever is causing that.

A tool, a control, and a behaviour

Three uses of the word travel together and it is worth separating them. As a behaviour, resonance is any frequency that rings more than its neighbours, in a room, a drum or a plate. As a control, it is a knob on a filter that boosts the level right at the cutoff. As a character, it is the singing, squelchy quality that control adds. None of these is a device you buy; they are things that happen, or settings you dial, on a tool you already have.

What does the resonance control on a filter do?

On a filter, the resonance control, sometimes labelled Q or emphasis, boosts a narrow band right at the cutoff frequency. That adds a sharp emphasis or a whistle exactly where the filter is acting, and it is what gives a filter sweep its squelchy, singing character. Where the cutoff sets where the filter acts, resonance sets how much it makes that spot stand out.

A little resonance adds a vocal or nasal emphasis and makes the cutoff point audible as you move it. Push it higher and that emphasis grows into a clear whistle riding on top of the sound. At extreme settings many filters begin to self-oscillate: the resonance feeds back on itself so strongly that the filter produces a pure tone of its own, even with no sound going in. At that point the filter is behaving less like a tone control and more like an oscillator, which is a trick sound designers use on purpose. How far a given filter goes, and how it sounds getting there, varies from one design to another.

This is the creative face of resonance. Set against a moving cutoff it is behind a great deal of what people recognise as the synth sound, from squelchy acid basslines to sweeping pads. Used gently it just adds focus; used hard it becomes an effect in its own right.

When is resonance a problem?

Resonance becomes a problem when a frequency rings on its own and draws attention to itself, so a sound turns boxy, honky or harsh instead of even. The same behaviour that sounds gorgeous on a filter sweep sounds ugly as an unwanted ring, and the difference is usually context rather than anything in the sound itself.

In the physical world this is unavoidable. Rooms, instrument bodies and objects all have natural resonant frequencies that ring more than others, and you hear the result long before you name it: a note that booms in one corner of a room, a drum with a hollow ring, a cheap speaker that honks on certain words. None of that is a knob someone turned up; it is simply how the space or the object behaves. In a recording those resonances get baked into the sound, and in a mix they pile up until something feels uneven or tiring to listen to.

So resonance is not good or bad on its own. It is both a creative tool, adding character and movement, and a problem, adding unwanted ringing, and which one you are dealing with depends entirely on whether you asked for it.

How do you tame a resonant peak?

You tame a resonant peak with a narrow EQ cut at the frequency that is ringing. A reliable way to find that frequency is to boost a narrow band and sweep it slowly across the range until the ring jumps out and sounds worse, then pull that same band down into a cut instead. You are using a boost as a searchlight, not as the fix.

Keep the cut only as narrow and as deep as it needs to be. A resonant peak is usually a single spot, so a tight, surgical band removes it while leaving the rest of the sound alone; a wide cut would take out tone you want to keep. Take out just enough that the ring stops drawing attention, then stop, since cutting further only thins the sound without solving anything more. If the resonance moves around, as a room can from note to note, one fixed cut will not catch all of it, and you are trading a little evenness for a little life.

Fix it at the source when you can

The cleanest fix for a resonance is often not EQ at all. A ringing drum can be tuned or damped, a boomy room can be treated or the mic moved, a harsh part can be re-recorded a little softer. Solving it at the source means you are not carving a hole in a finished sound to hide a problem you could have removed before it was recorded. EQ is the right tool when the sound is already committed, but reach for the source first where the option is still open.

Resonance runs right through everything on this page. It is the same behaviour whether it is singing on a filter sweep or ringing where you did not want it, and a lot of the craft of making an instrument is getting the first without the second.
