What is the difference between gain and volume?

Short answer: gain and volume both change the level of a signal, but they do it at different points in the chain and for different reasons. Gain is the input level, how hard you drive a signal into a device, plugin or channel, so it is set early and can change the tone. Volume, usually the fader, is the output level, how loud the finished signal is passed on, and it changes loudness without changing the tone.

None of this is tied to one plugin or one DAW. The two words get used loosely in the real world and some gear blurs the line, so read the roles below as what each control is usually for rather than strict definitions.

What is the difference between gain and volume?

The difference is where each control sits and what it is for. Gain sets the input level, how hard a signal is driven into a device, plugin or channel, and it lives near the start of the chain. Volume sets the output level, how loud the finished signal leaves and is passed on, and it usually lives at the end as the fader. Both move the level up or down, so on a quiet part they can look like the same thing, but they are doing different jobs at different points.

The job is the real difference. Gain is about how hard you push into the next stage, which is why it can change the tone: drive a preamp, an amp or a saturator harder and you get more of whatever that stage does when it is pushed, often warmth, thickness or distortion. Volume is about how loud the result is once the processing is done. A clean fader only changes loudness, so a part sounds like the same part whether it sits loud or quiet, just at a different level.

Gain is the level going in, volume is the level coming out. Gain can change the tone because it decides how hard the next stage is driven; volume only changes loudness. Set the sound with gain early, then balance how loud it sits with the fader.

What does gain do?

Gain sets how hard you drive a signal into the next stage. It is an input control, placed early, so its job is to decide the level going in rather than the level coming out. Get it right first and everything after it reacts the way it should.

Because it decides how hard the next stage is hit, gain doubles as a tone control whenever that stage reacts to level. Feed a preamp, an amp or a saturator a hotter signal and it colours the sound more, adding warmth or, pushed far enough, distortion. This is why a guitarist turns the gain up for a dirty sound and down for a clean one, and why a hardware-modelled plugin often has a level it wants to be fed at to behave as designed.

Gain also has a plainer job: bringing a signal to a sensible working level. A quiet recording can be lifted with gain or a trim so your other plugins see it in the range they expect, and a hot one can be pulled down so it does not clip. What does volume do?

Volume sets how loud the finished signal is passed on, without changing its tone. It is an output control, usually the channel fader, and it sits at the end of the chain where the processing is already done.

Where gain decides how hard you hit the next processor, volume decides how loud the result leaves the channel and sits against everything else. A clean fader adds no warmth and no distortion wherever you put it: move it up and the part is louder, move it down and it is quieter, but it is the same sound either way. That is exactly what you want for balancing a mix, because you can set how loud each part sits without touching the character you already dialled in.

The catch is that the words get swapped around in the real world. The "volume" knob on a guitar amp is often really a gain control, and some devices call their input gain a level. The reliable way to read any control is by what it does: if it changes how hard the next stage is driven, it is acting like gain; if it only changes how loud the output is, it is acting like volume.

Same word, different jobs

Not every control labelled "gain" or "volume" matches the textbook meaning. Judge a knob by where it sits and what it changes, not by its label. If turning it up dirties or thickens the sound, it is driving the next stage like gain; if it only gets louder or quieter, it is a volume.

When do you use gain versus the fader?

Use gain and a trim to set a healthy working level and to drive things for tone, and use the fader to balance how loud each part sits in the mix. Put simply: gain first, for the level and the colour going in, and the fader last, for the loudness coming out.

A safe default

Make the parts first, then set the levels

Gain and volume are quick to set once you have something worth setting them on. Writing and recording the part is the harder job; moving a trim or a fader is not.
