Automation is telling your DAW to change a control over time by itself, so a setting moves through the song without you touching it live. You draw the moves as points on an automation lane, or capture them live by grabbing a knob or fader while the track plays, and the DAW plays them back the same way every time.
None of this is tied to one plugin or one DAW. The controls and mode names below are common ones rather than a single right way, and every DAW handles automation a little differently.

Rather than riding a fader by hand every time you play the track, you record the moves once and the DAW repeats them exactly on every playback.
Those recorded moves live on a single parameter, such as a channel's volume, its pan, or a knob inside a plugin. You can see and edit them as points and lines on an automation lane, a strip under the track that shows the value of that one control across time. A line sloping up is the value rising; a flat line is it holding steady; a sharp step is it jumping.
There are two ways those moves get there. You can draw them by hand, clicking points onto the lane and shaping them into lines and curves, or you can capture them live by putting the track into a record mode, hitting play, and moving the control with the mouse or a hardware knob while the music runs. Either way you end up with the same thing: a set of instructions the DAW follows so the control moves itself.
The name is literal. A move you would otherwise have to make live, over and over, is handed to the machine to make for you automatically. Once it is written it plays back the same way every time, so a change you spent a minute getting right is locked in and you never have to perform it again.
Almost anything. Nearly any control, on the mixer or inside a plugin, can be automated, from a channel's volume and pan to a filter cutoff, an effect's mix amount, or a send level. If it is a knob, a fader or a switch you can move by hand, you can usually tell the DAW to move it for you.
A handful of uses come up again and again, and they are a good place to start because they solve everyday problems rather than just adding motion for its own sake.

The table is a starting list, not a limit. The point is that once you know how to write automation on one control, the same move works on any of them, so the technique is the thing to learn rather than a fixed set of tricks.
Two usual ways: capture your moves live by grabbing a control while the track plays, or draw the moves by hand as points on the automation lane. Most DAWs let you do both, and it is common to record a rough live pass and then tidy the points up by hand afterward.
Put the track or the plugin into a write mode, press play, and move the control as the music runs. The DAW records every move as automation you can play straight back. The mode names vary between DAWs, but a common set is write, touch and latch: write overwrites whatever was there as soon as playback starts, touch records only while you are actually holding the control and snaps back to the old value when you let go, and latch starts recording when you touch the control and keeps writing until you stop. Which one you want depends on whether you are laying down a first pass or fixing one moment inside an existing one.
Open the automation lane under the track and click to add points, then drag them into the shape you want and, in most DAWs, bend the segments between them into curves. This is the slower but more precise route, and it is the easy way to make a clean fade, a sweep that lands exactly on a bar, or a mute that flips on a specific beat. Because you are placing points directly, you get the same result every time without having to perform anything.
Do not worry too much about the exact names your DAW uses. Whatever they are called, live modes all answer the same two questions: when does recording start, and what happens to the old moves when you let go. Read your DAW's labels once with that in mind and they tend to make sense quickly.
Use it to add movement, energy and dynamics, so a mix breathes and an arrangement builds instead of sitting in one place. A sound that never changes is fine for a moment, but across a whole song it is small, steady changes that keep the ear interested, and automation is how you write those changes in.
That can be as quiet as a couple of dB of volume riding under a vocal so no line disappears, or as obvious as a filter opening up across eight bars to pull the energy up into a drop. Both are the same tool doing the same job: giving the track somewhere to go.
A few habits keep it musical rather than fussy, and they matter more than any single move.
Balance the mix static, then add automation for the parts that need to move, then keep the moves small and check the loop points. In practice that is a handful of gentle volume rides, one or two filter sweeps where the energy shifts, and a mute or two to change the arrangement. Do that and the track moves without ever sounding like it is fighting you.
Automation is a mixing and arranging step. It gives you something to move only once you have a part worth moving, and writing that part is the harder job. Drawing a fade or a filter sweep takes a minute; having music alive enough to be worth automating is the work.
