What is a spectrum analyzer?

Short answer: a spectrum analyzer is a meter that shows how much energy a sound has at each frequency. It draws that as a graph, with frequency running left to right, low on the left and high on the right, and the level at each frequency shown as height. So instead of only hearing the balance of a mix, you can see it, and spot where there is too much or too little.

The display is usually a live curve or a row of bars that move with the music, the lows on the left and the highs on the right. It is a way to check your ears, not to replace them, and the frequency figures here are approximate zones, not exact rules.

What is a spectrum analyzer?

A spectrum analyzer is a meter that shows how much energy your sound has at each frequency, drawn as a graph. Frequency runs along the bottom from low on the left to high on the right, and the level at each frequency is shown as height, so a tall point means a lot of energy there and a low point means a little. It turns something you normally only hear into something you can see.

Most analyzers draw this as a live curve or a set of bars that move in time with the music, rising and falling as the sound changes. A kick drum shows up as a lump on the far left, a bright cymbal as activity on the far right, and a full mix as a rolling shape that spans the whole width. Nothing is added to or taken from the sound. The analyzer only measures it and displays it.

It measures, it does not change

A spectrum analyzer is a meter, not an effect. Putting one on a track does nothing to the sound, the way a speedometer does nothing to a car. It is there to tell you what is happening so you can decide what to do next with another tool, usually an EQ. If you want to actually change the balance, that is a separate move.

How do you read a spectrum analyzer?

Read it left to right for frequency and bottom to top for level. The horizontal position of a point tells you which frequency it is, with low frequencies on the left and high frequencies on the right, and its height tells you how much energy sits there. A shape that leans left has more low end; a shape that leans right has more top.

Many analyzers can freeze a peak or show a running average, which makes a steady picture out of a moving one. That helps, because a build-up that only flashes past for a moment is hard to judge on a curve that never sits still. An average smooths it into a shape you can actually read.

How do producers use a spectrum analyzer?

To see problems their ears suspect and to confirm what they are hearing. The eyes catch some things faster than the ears, especially a slow build-up of energy, so an analyzer is good for spotting a boomy low end, finding a harsh peak, judging whether the top or the bottom is carrying too much, and comparing a track against a reference.

What are the limits of a spectrum analyzer?

It is a guide for your ears, not a replacement for them. A spectrum analyzer shows you energy, not whether a sound is good, and a mix that looks flat or matches some ideal curve is not necessarily a mix that sounds good. Chasing a picture instead of trusting your ears is one of the most common traps with these meters.

Every good record has its own shape, and plenty of them would look uneven on a meter. A track can read perfectly balanced and still feel dull, and a track with a bold, lopsided curve can sound exactly right. The analyzer cannot hear the music, it only counts energy, so it has nothing to say about groove, tone or feel. Use it to confirm a suspicion or to catch something you missed, then decide with your ears.

Mix with your eyes closed

The strongest move with a spectrum analyzer is to look, form a suspicion, then close your eyes and check it by ear before you touch anything. If the picture and the sound disagree, the sound wins. A meter that pulls you into flattening every curve until the mix looks tidy will happily talk you out of a record that already sounded great.
