What is a major scale?

A major scale is a seven note scale with a bright, happy sound, and it is the most common scale in Western music. It is built from one fixed pattern of whole steps and half steps, so the same shape gives a major scale from any note you start on. Worked from C it lands on nothing but the white keys of a piano, C D E F G A B, which makes it the clearest place to see how the pattern works.

What is a major scale?

A major scale is a scale of seven notes, built from one fixed pattern of steps, and it is the most common scale in Western music. It has a bright, open sound that most listeners hear as happy or cheerful, which is a large part of why so much pop, folk and classical music is written in a major key.

Worked from C, a major scale is C, D, E, F, G, A, B, then back to C an octave higher. Those are the seven white keys of a piano in order, with no sharps or flats at all, which is why C major is usually the first scale anyone learns. Every other major scale uses the same shape from a different starting note.

How do you build a major scale?

You build a major scale by choosing a starting note and stepping up through a fixed pattern of whole steps and half steps: W W H W W W H. A whole step (W) moves by two semitones and a half step (H) by one, a semitone being the smallest gap in Western music, the distance from one key to the very next. That single pattern is the whole definition of the scale.

Apply it from C and it walks you straight up the white keys. The table lines the pattern up against the notes it produces, with the step to the next note read down the right column.

Start the same W W H W W W H pattern on any other note and you get that note's major scale, with whatever sharps or flats it takes to keep the spacing identical. Build it from G and you get G, A, B, C, D, E, F#, then G: one sharp, F#, is forced in so that the sixth step, E to F#, stays a whole step and the last, F# to G, stays a half. The note names change from key to key; the shape never does.

Each of those seven notes has a number, its scale degree, counted 1 to 7 from the starting note. Degree 1 is the tonic, the home note the scale is named after and the note a melody in the key tends to settle on. Numbering the notes this way lets you talk about a major scale without tying it to any one key, since the third degree behaves like the third degree whether you are in C, G or anywhere else.

Why does the major scale sound happy?

The major scale tends to sound bright and happy because of where its steps fall, and above all because of its third note. In C major that third is E, and the distance from the home note C up to E is what musicians call a major third, a wide, open sounding interval. That gap is the main thing our ears use to tell a major scale from a minor one, and it is why the scale leans bright rather than dark.

Lower that third, along with a couple of the other notes, and you get a minor scale on the same home note, which is usually heard as darker or sadder. So bright and happy is a fair, rough label for the major scale, as long as you treat it as a tendency rather than a rule, since tempo, harmony and how the notes are used all colour the feeling too.

There is a neat link hiding here. The C major scale contains exactly the same seven notes as the A minor scale; the two simply start in different places and treat a different note as home. Scales that share a set of notes like this are called relative, so A minor is the relative minor of C major, built on the sixth degree of the major scale, the same notes carrying a noticeably different mood.

How do you use the major scale?

You use a major scale by picking a key and then drawing your melody, bassline and chords from its seven notes. Because they all come from the same small set, they agree with one another by default, and the ear hears them as belonging to one piece of music. Choosing a major key first is a quick way to keep everything you write in tune with itself.

The major scale also works as a ruler for the rest of theory. Chords are built by stacking notes from it, a key is named after its major (or minor) scale, and other scales and intervals are very often described by how they differ from the major scale, which is why the flats and sharps in a minor or pentatonic scale are written as changes to the plain major degrees. Learn the major scale and you have the reference nearly everything else is measured against.

If you want an even safer set of notes to start with, the pentatonic scale is a five note subset of the major scale, the same scale with its fourth and seventh dropped, which leaves C, D, E, G, A in the key of C. It is the major scale with its two trickiest notes removed, so it is a common first step before using all seven.
