A diminished chord is a tense, unstable chord built by stacking minor thirds. Its plain form is a diminished triad, a root with a minor third and a diminished fifth, and stacking one more minor third on top gives a diminished seventh. Both sound restless and unresolved, which is exactly what makes them useful: they pull hard toward a calmer chord. Here is how a diminished chord is put together, how it differs from the half-diminished chord it is often confused with, and how it is used, worked out from C.
Real theory, explained plainly. It works the same on a piano, a guitar, or in a piano roll, in any key and any style. Nothing here needs a particular instrument.
A diminished chord is a tense, unstable chord built by stacking minor thirds. Its basic form is the diminished triad: a root, a minor third and a diminished fifth, which is a plain fifth pulled in by a semitone.
Start on any note, the root. Go up a minor third, three semitones, to the second note, then up another minor third from there to the third note. From C that is C up to Eb, then Eb up to Gb, giving Cdim = C Eb Gb. Because it is two minor thirds stacked, the outer interval, from C to Gb, comes out as a diminished fifth, six semitones wide. That interval is the tritone, and it is what gives the chord its uneasy, unresolved sound.
That is the difference from the more familiar chords. A plain triad in its major or minor form is anchored by a stable perfect fifth, and it sounds settled. Swap that perfect fifth for a diminished fifth and the same three-note shape turns tense, as if it is leaning toward some other chord rather than sitting still.
A diminished seventh chord, written dim7, is a diminished triad with one more minor third stacked on top, so all four notes sit a minor third apart. From C you take C Eb Gb and go up another minor third from Gb, which lands on A, giving Cdim7 = C Eb Gb A. That top note is a diminished seventh above the root, which is why it is sometimes written Bbb, a doubly flattened B; it sounds the same as A.
Because every gap in the chord is the same size, a minor third, the diminished seventh is perfectly symmetrical and has no single note that clearly feels like the root. That even spacing is what makes it sound very tense and a little unmoored, like a chord waiting to go somewhere.
It is easy to confuse a diminished seventh with a half-diminished chord, but they are not the same. A half-diminished chord, written m7b5 and read minor seventh flat five, is a diminished triad plus a minor seventh, not a diminished seventh. From C that is Cm7b5 = C Eb Gb Bb. The only difference from the diminished seventh is the top note, Bb instead of A, one semitone higher, and that single step makes the half-diminished sound softer and less strained than the fully diminished seventh. So the family shares the same tense diminished triad at the bottom, C Eb Gb. What sits on top, a fourth minor third or a minor seventh, decides whether you get the sharp bite of a diminished seventh or the softer unease of a half-diminished chord.
Diminished chords sound tense because they are built around the tritone, the diminished fifth, which is the most unstable interval in common harmony, and because their stacked minor thirds leave them with no settled resting point.
A major or minor triad is held together by a perfect fifth, seven semitones wide, an open interval the ear reads as stable and at rest. A diminished chord replaces that with a diminished fifth, six semitones, the tritone, and the ear tends to hear that interval as wanting to close in on something calmer. In a diminished seventh the symmetry adds to the effect: with four notes evenly spaced a minor third apart, no single note stands out as the clear root, so the chord seems to hang in the air until it moves.
That restlessness is the point rather than a fault. A diminished chord works a little like a question, and the ear waits for an answer. Left on its own it sounds incomplete, which is why these chords are almost always heading somewhere rather than sitting still.
You mostly use a diminished chord as tension: a passing or leading chord that pulls strongly toward a calmer chord a short step away. It is the setup, and the chord that follows is the payoff. A few common moves show the idea.
Because the diminished seventh is symmetrical, one shape can resolve in more than one direction, which is part of why jazz and classical players reach for it when pivoting between keys. You hear diminished chords across jazz, classical and film music, where a brief hit of tension makes the resolution that follows feel earned. As a rough guide they work best in small doses: used sparingly they are a strong effect, but leaned on too hard they can start to sound melodramatic, so most writers treat them as a spice rather than a main chord.
