What is a bitcrusher?

A bitcrusher is an effect that degrades a digital signal on purpose, to make it sound lo-fi, crunchy and retro. It does this in two ways: it lowers the bit depth, which adds noise and grit, and it lowers the sample rate, which throws away high frequencies and adds a metallic, ringing edge. Together they give the gritty, 8-bit character the effect is known for.

This is about what a bitcrusher does to any sound, on any tool, in any DAW. The names and layouts vary, but the two things underneath, bit-depth reduction and sample-rate reduction, are the ones described here.

What is a bitcrusher?

A bitcrusher is an effect that deliberately degrades a digital signal to make it sound lo-fi, crunchy and retro. Instead of trying to keep a sound clean, it does the opposite on purpose, lowering the quality of the digital audio so it picks up noise, grit and a hard, stepped edge. That deliberate lowering of quality is the whole idea, and it is why a bitcrusher is reached for when a sound is too clean and needs to feel older, rougher or more like an early digital machine.

It works by doing two separate things, and most bitcrushers let you set each one on its own:

A bitcrusher is digital degradation. It lowers the resolution of the digital audio itself, which is a different thing from the warmth of analog tape or tubes. Tape and tube saturation round a signal off and add mostly musical harmonics, so they sound warm. A bitcrusher instead adds quantization noise and aliasing, which is why it sounds crunchy and electronic rather than warm. When you want worn and warm, tape is the tool; when you want crunchy and digital, a bitcrusher is.

What does bit-depth reduction do?

Bit-depth reduction adds quantization noise and grit, and pushed hard it becomes a harsh, gritty distortion. It works by lowering the number of bits used to describe the level of each sample.

Digital audio measures the level of a sound thousands of times a second, and the bit depth is how finely each of those measurements can be recorded. More bits means more possible steps to land on, so the measurement stays close to the real value. Fewer bits means fewer steps, so each measurement has to round to the nearest one it has left, and the gap between the real value and the rounded value is an error. That error is heard as quantization noise, a grainy grit that rides on top of the sound and becomes more obvious as the signal gets quieter.

How much you hear depends on how far you push it. A small reduction adds a subtle graininess that reads as an old, low-resolution recording. Take it further, down to only a handful of bits, and the rounding gets so coarse that the waveform is visibly stepped and the result turns into a harsh, gritty distortion. That heavy setting is really another way of adding harmonics to a sound, in the same family as the effects in the distortion and saturation guide, though a bitcrusher gets there by a digital route and keeps its own noisy, electronic edge.

What does sample-rate reduction do?

Sample-rate reduction, also called downsampling, throws away high frequencies and folds them back into the sound as aliasing, which gives a metallic, ringing, 8-bit character. It works by lowering how often the signal is measured.

The sample rate is how many times a second the audio is measured. A high rate captures fast detail, which is what high frequencies are, so the sound is bright and full. Lower the rate, usually by holding each measured value for longer before taking the next one, and the signal can no longer describe those fast wiggles, so the top end is lost and the sound gets duller and coarser.

The part that gives the effect its character is what happens to the frequencies that are too high for the new, lower rate. They do not simply vanish. They fold back down into the audible range as new tones that were not in the original and usually do not line up with the notes being played. This folding is called aliasing, and those extra, off-key tones are the metallic, ringing, slightly clangy quality you hear as a sound is downsampled harder. It is the same effect that gives early samplers and old game hardware their unmistakable 8-bit ring.

What is a bitcrusher good for?

A bitcrusher is good for lo-fi and chiptune sounds, for aggressive drums and bass, and for a general retro digital character. It is the tool you reach for when a sound is too clean and modern and you want it to feel older, rougher or more like an early digital machine. The common jobs:

A safe way in is to start with the effect blended low on the mix control and turn the bits and the rate down slowly until the grit and the metallic edge appear, then ease back to taste. Because a bitcrusher adds both noise and level, it can seem better simply because it is louder, so it helps to match the level to the bypassed sound before you judge it. And like most strong effects, it flatters some sources and ruins others, so it pays to take it off anything it is not actually helping.

A bitcrusher gives you the crunchy, digital end of lo-fi. The other end is warm and analog, the sound of worn tape rather than low bit rates, and it is a different flavour worth knowing.
