Accounts of the style usually trace its early sound to producers such as Skream, Benga and Digital Mystikz in South London, with a later, heavier and more distorted strain sometimes called brostep and often associated with Skrillex popularising it in the United States, though the exact histories and labels are debated.
The pieces are fairly consistent from track to track. Lock the beat, the sub and the modulated bass together and you have the core; the rest is arrangement and processing:

Program a sparse, syncopated beat at around 140 BPM with the snare on beat three, so the groove reads in half time and feels closer to 70. The kick and the snare carry the pattern, with a lot of space left between them rather than a busy, filled bar. That space is deliberate: it gives the sub and the modulated bass room to move, and it sets up the tension that the drop releases.
In a straight 4/4 pattern the snare lands on beats two and four. In dubstep it usually lands on beat three alone, which halves the sense of speed: the track is still running at 140, but the backbeat now falls once per bar instead of twice, so it feels like about 70. That slow, heavy pulse is a big part of the genre's weight, and it is what leaves the wide gaps the bass fills.
The drums are usually stripped back rather than dense. A solid kick, a big snare or clap on beat three, and a few hats or small percussion around them is often the whole pattern. Swing and slightly off-grid placement add the syncopation, and the empty space is left empty on purpose. The point is contrast: sparse, spacious drums against a huge, moving bass, so neither one crowds the other.
Dubstep bass is usually two things at once: a deep, clean sub for the low weight, and a heavy modulated bass on top for the movement and the growl. The sub holds the bottom while the modulated layer does the talking, and keeping them separate is what lets the bass feel enormous without turning to mud.
The sub is the foundation, usually a clean sine kept mono and low, carrying the root notes of the track down at the bottom. It wants to be simple and steady so it holds the weight on a big system without smearing the rest of the mix, and it often plays the same slow, half-time rhythm as the beat.
Over the sub sits the bass you actually hear moving. The classic version is the wobble, made by using an LFO to open and close a filter in time with the tempo, so the tone breathes in a rhythm. Heavier growls are built from detuned oscillators, distortion, and formant or FM tones that add vocal, metallic and screaming edges. All the wobble, distortion and growl happens up in the mids and highs. The clean sub sits underneath and holds the low end steady the whole time, so the track never loses its weight when the modulated bass closes down or thins out. Building the two as separate layers is what keeps a big bass from turning to mud.
Dubstep is arranged around the drop, the point where the full beat and the heavy bass hit together, so you spend the bars before it building tension and holding space, then release it all at once. The intro and the build lead up to that moment, the drop delivers it, and a breakdown resets the ear before the next one.
The space in the beat and the arrangement is doing work. Strip things back before the drop, thin the drums or drop them out, bring in a riser, a filter sweep, a held note or a vocal, and let the pressure build so the ear is waiting for the hit. A short silence or a single held sound right before the drop makes the release land harder. The emptiness is not a gap to fill; it is the tension the drop pays off.
The drop is where the beat and the bass arrive together and the modulated bass takes over as the lead. It is usually the heaviest, busiest part of the track, and everything before it is arranged to make it feel like a release. Many tracks run two drops, often with a variation on the bass or the beat the second time, with a breakdown in between to reset before you hit it again.
Loop the beat with the sub and the modulated bass on their own and leave it playing. If those three lock together and the drop already pulls you in, the track will work, and the risers, vocals and arrangement are what you build on top. If it feels weak before the loop comes round, the fix is in the beat and the bass, not in more layers over the top.
Everything above is a set of decisions you can make by hand, and it is worth learning to make them. The slow part is often the writing itself: finding the sparse, syncopated bass movement and the riff that lock to your beat and carry the drop, then getting them into the track as notes you can still edit.
