What is a tape stop effect?

A tape stop is the sound of a tape machine or a record being stopped while it is still playing, so the music slows down and drops in pitch at the same time, sliding into a short downward wobble before it falls silent. It is one of the most recognisable moves in electronic and hip hop production.

This is about what a tape stop is and how to make one, on any tool, in any DAW. It slows speed and pitch together to a halt, which is a different thing from the small ongoing wobble of wow and flutter, or a plain pitch bend that moves pitch on its own.

What is a tape stop effect?

A tape stop is the effect of a tape machine or a record being stopped mid play, so the pitch and speed drop together into a downward slur before the sound falls silent. On tape and on vinyl, speed and pitch are physically tied together: the sound is written along the medium at one steady speed, so if the medium slows down, everything plays back slower and lower at the same time. When you cut the power to a deck or lift a record off its platter, the reel or the platter does not halt instantly. It coasts down over a fraction of a second, and in that moment you hear the music decelerate and sag in pitch until it stops.

That coast to a halt, pitched and smeared, is the tape stop. It is worth being clear about what kind of effect it is. A tape stop moves speed and pitch together, all the way down to a stop. That makes it a different thing from wow and flutter, which is a small, ongoing wobble in pitch that never actually stops the sound, and a different thing again from a plain pitch bend, which slides the pitch while the tempo keeps running at its normal pace.

What does a tape stop sound like?

It sounds like the music being dragged to a halt: a downward dive where the sound slows down and drops in pitch together, which can be a fast snap or a slow, drawn out sag before it disappears. Because speed and pitch fall together, the rhythm smears and slows as the notes bend down, and the two cannot be pulled apart. A fast stop is a quick downward flick, almost a hiccup on the last beat. A slow stop is a long sinking pull, the whole mix drooping and blurring over a beat or two before it dies.

This locked together quality is exactly what separates it from a synth pitch bend. On a pitch bend the pitch slides down but the tempo carries on at the same speed, so the groove keeps moving underneath. On a tape stop the whole thing decelerates at once, so the groove itself slows and thickens as it falls. The exact flavour comes from how the tape or the varispeed model behaves as it coasts down: the curve of the slowdown, a little wobble, and the warmth that tape adds along the way.

So if a transition ends with the beat itself grinding to a stop, that is a tape stop. If the pitch is wandering slightly the whole way through a track without ever halting, that is wow and flutter. If a lead slides down in pitch but the drums keep marching, that is a pitch bend.

How do you make a tape stop?

The usual way is to automate a tape speed or varispeed control down to zero over a beat or two, or to reach for a dedicated tape stop plugin, or to slow a real tape or record by hand. All three do the same thing in the end, which is pull the playback speed down so the pitch falls with it. A few common routes:

The same move in reverse gives you a tape start, sometimes called a spin up. Instead of slowing to a halt, the sound speeds up and rises into pitch from a dead stop, as if the machine is coming up to speed. You make it the same way, by automating the speed from zero up to normal, or by using the plugin's start control, and it works well as an intro into a phrase or a drop.

For a convincing result, the character matters as much as the pitch drop. A good tape stop picks up a little wobble and the warmth of tape saturation as the speed and level change on the way down, which is why a modelled tape engine tends to sound more alive than a bare pitch envelope drawn on a clean synth. Whichever route you take, keep the stop short: most of the effect lives in the first beat of the slowdown.

When should you use a tape stop?

A tape stop works best as a transition or a drop effect: to end a phrase, to mark the moment right before a breakdown or a beat change, or, chopped short and repeated, as a rhythmic stutter. It is a strong, obvious gesture, so it reads as a deliberate moment rather than something to leave running in the background. A few places it tends to land well:

A little goes a long way. Used on every transition it wears out fast and starts to feel like a gimmick, so it is worth saving for the moments that matter. It also tends to sit best on a full mix or a busy sustained part, where there is enough going on for the slowdown to grab hold of, rather than on a single clean note where the dip in pitch can sound thin. As with most tape effects, trust your ears over the numbers, and pull it back if it starts pulling focus from the music.
