A reese bass is a detuned, phasing, growling bass built from two or more sawtooth oscillators tuned slightly apart so they beat against each other. It is a staple of drum and bass, neurofunk and dubstep. Here is how the growl works, how to keep the low end solid, and how to add the aggressive edge.

A reese bass is a growling, metallic bass made by detuning two or more sawtooth oscillators against each other. When two saws are tuned slightly apart, they beat and their phase relationship keeps shifting, and that constant shift is the moving, hollow growl the sound is known for. The name comes from a late 1980s track released under the alias Reese, and the sound went on to become a staple of drum and bass, neurofunk and dubstep.
The trick is that a reese is not one thing you dial up, it is a small stack of choices. You detune oscillators to get the growl, add movement so it stays alive, keep a clean sub underneath so the low end does not go weak, and then filter and distort the top for the aggression. Start with two sawtooth oscillators on the same note, then detune one of them by a small amount so the two drift against each other. That drift is the growl: the two saws beat, their phases slide in and out of step, and the result is the moving, hollow, metallic tone. A little detune gives a slow, wide wobble, and more detune gives a faster, buzzier, more aggressive growl. Adding a third or fourth detuned oscillator thickens it further, though two is enough for a classic reese.
A static reese can sound flat, so most of them have something moving. The simplest way is an LFO or a slow automation on the detune amount or on a filter cutoff, so the growl breathes and shifts over the length of a note instead of sitting still. Keep the movement slow and musical rather than fast and random, and it reads as a living, evolving bass. If the LFO is new to you, it is just a slow control signal that sweeps a parameter up and down on its own.
A reese has only a few controls that really matter, and it is worth knowing what each one does before you reach for presets. The table is a starting point, not a rule.

Keep a clean sub oscillator or a separate mono sub layer underneath, and leave it out of all the detuning and widening. The growl is what you spread and process up top, but the detuned oscillators that make it are exactly what can go weak or vanish when the sound is summed to mono. So the reliable approach is two layers: a plain sine or triangle carrying the deep weight in mono and centred, and the detuned reese layer sitting above it with a high-pass filter so the two do not clash.
Because a reese relies on the phase difference between detuned oscillators, that same phase difference can partially cancel when the stereo image is summed to mono, which is what a lot of clubs, phones and laptops do. The result is a growl that sounds huge on headphones and then thins out badly in mono. Always check the sound in mono, and keep the sub layer mono and centred no matter what the growl above it is doing, so the low weight survives even when the top does thin.
The point of the split is that each layer has one job. The sub holds the low end and stays untouched, clean and mono. The reese layer carries the growl, the width and the grit, and gets high-passed so it is not fighting the sub for the bottom. Widen or distort the whole thing at once and the low end goes soft in mono; keep the two apart and you get the movement and aggression on top with a solid, dependable bottom underneath.
The aggression comes from filtering and heavy distortion on the growl layer. A low-pass or band-pass filter focuses the tone and decides how bright and biting it is, and then distortion or waveshaping adds the extra harmonics and grit that give a reese its snarl. Push the distortion until the growl has real edge, then pull it back to taste. This is also where a reese picks up the harmonics that let it read on small speakers that cannot reproduce the deep sub.
Distortion, saturation and waveshaping all add new harmonics above what the oscillators put out, and that is most of the aggressive character. Start gentle and add more until the growl bites, keeping the heaviest processing on the reese layer and off the clean sub. Several lighter stages of distortion in a row often sound better than one extreme one, and a filter after the distortion tidies up the harshest top that the distortion throws off.
The dense, evolving reese basses in neurofunk are usually not one patch. A common way to build one is to layer several detuned or differently filtered versions, then resample: bounce the sound to audio and process that audio again with more filtering, distortion or movement. Resampling lets each pass build on the last, and it is how a simple two oscillator growl turns into the thick, shifting, aggressive bass those styles are known for. Keep the clean sub separate through all of it.
Check the reese in mono, on a phone or a laptop, not only on headphones. If the growl thins out badly there, the detuning is cancelling and the sub layer is doing more work than you thought, so lean on the clean mono sub and narrow the widening. If the pitch and the bite both survive in mono, the layers are split right and the bass will hold up wherever it is played.
