How to make a pluck sound

A pluck is a short, percussive note that stabs in and fades away, like a string being plucked or a mallet striking. It is one of the most useful sounds in electronic music, and it is built almost entirely from its envelope, so you can make one on nearly any synth. Here are the choices that turn a plain tone into a pluck, from the envelope to the effects that place it.

What is a pluck sound?

A pluck sound is a short, percussive melodic note with a fast attack and a quick decay, like a plucked string. It appears the instant you press a key, then fades away quickly on its own, which leaves clear space between the notes and gives the rhythmic, stabbing feel that names it. Most plucks live in the mid to upper range, play one note or a short chord at a time, and repeat in a pattern rather than holding, which is why they work so well as a rhythmic melodic layer.

What makes a sound a pluck is mostly its shape in time, not its tone, so a pluck is really a short chain of choices you can apply to almost any starting sound. How do you set the envelope for a pluck?

Set the amp envelope with a fast attack, a short decay down to little or no sustain, and a short release, so each note stabs in and fades out on its own. A second envelope pointed at the filter, opening on the attack and then snapping closed again, adds the bright plucked snap at the very start of each note. The two envelopes together are what turn a flat, held tone into something that reads as a pluck.

The amp envelope makes it stab and fade

The amp envelope shapes the volume over the life of the note, and for a pluck you want it front-loaded. A fast attack brings the sound in at once, with no slow swell. A short decay and a low or zero sustain then let the level fall away quickly while the key is still held, so the note is loudest at the start and gone soon after, the way a real plucked string rings and dies. Keep the release short too, so notes do not smear into one another and the pattern stays crisp. A filter envelope adds the snap

A lot of the character of a pluck comes from a second envelope on a low-pass filter's cutoff. Set it to open the filter on the attack and then close it again quickly, and each note gets a brief bright click at its start that mellows as it fades, which is what makes a pluck feel snappy and percussive rather than dull. Which oscillator and filter settings work?

A bright oscillator such as a saw or a square makes a sharp, cutting pluck, while a sine or a triangle makes a soft, mellow one. Run whichever you choose through a low-pass filter set so the sound cuts without turning harsh, and a touch of resonance near the cutoff adds bite. The filter keeps it from getting harsh

Bright waves such as saws carry a lot of high harmonics, and a repeating pluck can turn fatiguing if all of that top is left in. A low-pass filter sets how much of it you keep, so pull the cutoff down until the pluck cuts cleanly but does not sting, then let the filter envelope from the last section supply the brightness only at the start of each note. A little resonance lifts the frequencies right around the cutoff, which tends to make the snap read as sharper.

A touch of unison or detune for width

Stacking a couple of copies of the oscillator and detuning them slightly against each other widens and thickens a thin pluck, giving it a fuller, more shimmering feel. A little goes a long way here: a small amount of detune fattens the sound, while a lot starts to sound out of tune and can wash out the sharp attack that makes a pluck a pluck. How do you make a pluck sit in a track?

A dry pluck can sound thin and exposed on its own, so a touch of reverb or delay places it in a space and gives it depth. Keep it light: enough to seat the sound, not so much that the tails blur the notes into one another and the rhythm gets lost. Done well, a short pluck with a little space around it sits neatly under a vocal or a lead and drives the track along without crowding it.

Reverb and delay give it space

Reverb puts the pluck in a room and softens its dry, clicky edge, while a delay timed to the tempo can turn a single note into a repeating, rhythmic figure that fills out the gaps between hits. Both add depth, but both also push the sound back and blur it if you overdo them, so they usually sit lighter on a pluck than on a pad. The test

Play the pluck as a repeating pattern against a beat, not as one held note. Does each hit stab in and clear out before the next, leaving the rhythm crisp? If the notes smear together, shorten the decay and the release, or ease off the reverb and delay tails. If the pluck sounds dull and lifeless, it usually wants more of the filter envelope snap at the start, not more volume.
