Best plugins for music in another room

For music heard through walls and doorways, start with THALM. For a large library of speaker and microphone colours, consider Speakerphone. For a static shot, the EQ and reverb already in your editor may be enough.

Which worldizing tool fits the scene?

Choose by what changes in the shot. A party behind a wall needs muffling and distance; a phone on a desk also needs the speaker’s character. THALM centres on the first job. Speakerphone combines speaker and microphone impulse responses with room processing and other effects. Neither choice replaces listening against the picture.

Can I do this with the effects I already own?

Yes. For a static source, start with a gentle low-pass filter, lower the level and add a short reverb that matches the listening space. Compare the result with the untreated sound while watching the scene. If the camera crosses a doorway, automate the transition instead of leaving one EQ setting across the cut. Our existing another-room guide gives starting settings.

How should I compare the demos?

Use the same dry music excerpt and match perceived volume. Test a closed door, an open doorway and a moving viewpoint. Listen for whether the music belongs in the scene, especially underneath dialogue. A dramatic effect in isolation may be too distracting in the edit. Check the exact plugin format supported by your editor before buying.
