Best tape-loop plugins for evolving music
Choose SILT for melodic loops that generate an evolving piece. Choose Enso when you want to record and overdub your own audio with tape-style loop behaviour. The best choice depends on whether the notes or the performance should come from you.

Which tool fits your workflow?
| Tool | Price | Choose it for | Consider first |

| SILT | US $39 | Four melodic loops drifting out of phase with tape character. | A generative instrument; not a replacement for a conventional performance looper. |
| Enso | US $59 shown; $79 regular | Recording, overdubbing and changing playback direction or speed. | You supply the audio and build the performance. |
| Your DAW’s audio tracks | Included with your existing DAW | Arranging loops of different lengths by hand. | Tape wear and evolving feedback require extra routing or effects. |

Do you need a tape instrument or a tape-style looper?
SILT creates melodic material as part of its instrument design. Enso records supplied audio and gives the record and playback heads independent speed control. Both can lead to evolving music, but they begin at different places. If your idea starts with a guitar phrase or a field recording you want to overdub, audition the looper workflow first.
What makes a loop change over time?
Unequal loop lengths change the relationship between repeating parts. Overdub feedback and effects can also change the recorded material each time it circulates. These are separate behaviours: one changes the combination of notes, while the other changes the audio itself. Test the behaviour you actually want before choosing by the word “tape”.
How can I audition a loop tool fairly?
Start with a short, sparse idea and listen for several cycles. Try a little pitch instability before adding heavy saturation. Check whether the result still leaves space for the main part of your track. In a recording looper, also test stopping, clearing and returning to the loop while the host keeps playing.
